how well do these work on the adapter for the AVIC-Z1. i have heard conflicting reports from stores. some say they do work some say they dont.

And another thing. the buttons on this thing feel so damn cheap

I did the swc conversion on my non steering wheel control truck.

I hooked up the swix, and it has worked excelent. No complaints here, and i dont ever use the remote anymore. Since i didnt have the electronic hvac i used those wheel buttons to control more functions
Mine does
+ vol -
Source and mute
+ track -
+ playlist/cd -

I didnt do it on a pioneer, i did it on a kenwood ddx 1607 (i think, cant remember the exact model at the moment)

I do believe they make a pioneer specific unit. you have to check, but even if they dont the swix should work fine.

theres a full writup on here. its titled kenwood swix and steering controls

The PAC SWI-PS interface will work fine. It is designed for Pioneer radios and plugs into the unit. The SWI-X is a universal "last resort" unit. It has a remote eye just like your wireless remote and has to be in view of the radio to work. Also direct sunlight on the unit keeps if from working right.

Accessory power

Sorry for the highjack, but when I install a PAC switch which wire do I use for accessory power? I don't want to have to dim my lights to get it to work, thanks for any help.

quite simple, all the connections are right at your radio plug...
here it is,

connect your power to the light green and violet colored wire, pin number one.
then connect your accessry wire to the pink.black wire, pin number 2

ground, well you get the point.
good luck
