Oregon Inlet campground opens on the 2nd of April, its right over the dunes and immediately next to a beach access road.....you can camp there and walk right over the dunes at night and have a fire.....during the day bring the rig out to the beach

I'm heading down to Avon/Hatteras on Memorial Day. A bunch of us go and take our rigs out on the sand. It's a lot of fun...we do it every year.

So where exactly is Oregon Inlet Campground? I'm curious b/c we've been talking about camping somewhere other than Hatteras....and hoping to go somewhere where the powder is a little thinner, if possible. I'd like to check out a few places this year down that way. Can't wait. Time to open up the camper and air it out!!!!!

Once you get on the outer banks head S thru Kittyhawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head as soon as you get thru Nags head there will be a big intersection with one road heading back W to the mainland and then NC 12 (the road your on) continuing S to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Once your on that just drive untill right before the giant Bridge and the campground is on your left and the Oregon Inlet Marina is on your right.

Really depends on the Tide, if the tide came up all the way the night before its hard packed, by the end of the day its loosened up from the sun drying it and the vehicles driving thru it, there are tons of stock vehicles out there tho and you should be perfectly fine.

Thanks for all the info man. I talked to my wife last night...we want to take my son (he's 4) out to Jockey's Ridge so he can fly his first kite. I'm going to try to find the access your talking about next to Oregon Inlet Campground and check everything out. Will probably do it next week since it's spring break for my wife; she's a teacher. Definitely looking forward to OBX this year.

So do I take that left towards Hatteras or keep bearing right back towards the mainland?

So they stop permitting driving after 1 May? That sucks. Maybe that's why the fellas always opt to go down to Hatteras instead.

You can still drive on the beach all day, just not from 10pm-6am....I would say the Oregon inlet is where the majority of the trucks go....Its like a truck show all day everyday....but all you have to do to get some privacy is pick a spot and park, you pretty much own that part of the beach as soon as you park.

No, Gloucester doesn't count.
We let them come over here for free but, we charge them two dollars to go home.
