The company Horiba makes a portable scanner to measure air/fuel ratio.

Thanks Jason. I've never heard of it, does it work, do you have one or anybody else?

I dont know if it was a Horiba or not, but I saw Johnny Lightning use one to tune a truck at a NMRA race in Byron, IL last year.

The sensor takes the place of one of your O2 sensors and you run the wire in the truck and place the unit on the seat or dash.

Neat set-up. I think all the tuners have them. Once you get a good A/F reading, its easy to burn a chip for your paticular vehicle.

I personaly think this is a better set-up than some Dyno shops have where they place a wand in the exhaust pipe to measure O2.

Check this A/F meter out. Its about $600 with the display

Tim,

What Dyno are you using, and where is it? I typically use Precision Dyno in Belmont; the guys name is Tommy and he has been doing this sort of thing for quite some time. My last time at the dyno I made 365rwhp and 462ft/lb of torque. Maybe you should try a different dyno to see if your numbers change--just a thought. I have the number if you need it, but he is always there on Saturday's, unless he is racing somewhere.

Ron,

Thanks, I might JUST do that. This guy I went to today was on Albermarle Road in Charlotte. He seemed a little inexperienced for sure. I don't want to say bad things about him because he was a really nice guy but he seemed to be inexperienced with his equipment (computers, A/F meters, and such).

I mentioned the guy in Belmont to him and he talked him down like HE catered to the ricers that just wanted to see the speedometer maxed out and take a pic of it. It made me wonder if he actually knew what he was doing.

But I must add that he is involved in SCCA racing and had two racecars in trailers with a F-350 pull truck. who Knows???????

It might pay me to check with your guy, I know where he is.

If you have his phone number, give it to me please and I'll call him, go over and talk to him, and see what I think.

Tim -

Yours and all modern (late 95 and later) vehicles have management system call OBD2 one of the parameters that it looks at is timing. A scan tool hooks into the service port under the dash and allows you to look at the values your sensors are reporting to the ecu. you need to get a scan tool that can sample your timing signal quickly enough for you to see what jim has programmed into the chip, I am sure that most of his programs are very similar but have different timing curves built to cover each customers particular wants, gas availibilty, and towing needs.

If he burned you chip on the soft side he may be pulling a few degrees of timing @ WOT to avoid detonation. We have the same mods so our trucks should make very similay hp and trq SAE corrected on a dynojet. What I can do is drive my truck with the scan tool hooked up and get the timing readings I am getting under different conditions and we can compare notes. More timing advance = more power (and detonation if its too much advanced for the given octane of the gas in your tank)

Bob

EX. My 1996 cobra made 471RWHP on 14psi of boost and 17deg of timing (total advance) next run @ 15deg of timing the car only made 440 or so.
