I wonder why one of the companies/tuners don't make a smooth intake pipe...seems like replacing that rough rubber boot would be one of the first intake mods...

Nice setup by the way!

The kit includes a cleanable (K&N type) Volant brand cone filter. It's not as long as the 12-in. power shot used by PSP and JL, nor is it open at the end. It does have a larger circumference and most likely flows on par with the longer filter. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work with the BABOLT piece.

What part of the JL ram air did you retain when adding the volant airbox? Do you think the same gains would be there going from a stock setup straight to the Volant? I am seriously considering ordering one this week. Thanks.

JL stage I ram air kit was retained. I think that you would get a noticeable gain without the ram air kit. I think the smooth air intake duct alone will make a difference. The airfilter has a larger surface area and draws only cooler outside air. This should make a big difference by itself, also. The ram air kit is just butter, cheddar, or the icing on the cake.

It's $296.00 at www.truckperformance.com. The $313.00 was shipping included.

I think I'm the first one here to get one. I got one of the first 10 shipped from Truck Performance.

The Volant is an alternative to the cold air kits. You wouldn't be able to use any of it. This is the part of the ram air kit I retained. Just in case we're not on the same page.

That's actually a JL stage 1 ram air kit. You can get one here. http://www.johnnylightningperf.com/home.asp It's a very nicely done piece. High quality.

Volant

Odin's Wrath,
You sound like a promoter from Volant. I saw this kit last November at Sema in Vegas. What you write is taken directly from their literature.

I reviewed this kit and in my opinion and SVT (I spoke to an engineer from SVT) and this box is really no better than the stock box simply because it is restricted by the size of the hole in the fender. You can get the same results by puting a K&N panel filter in your stock box.

And BTW, unlike many sports cars with tight engine compartments, the Lightning has plenty of fresh cold air under the hood. An open filter gives the best performance and the best sound. I you don't like the sound then keep the box.

Bottom line, the Volant filter does nothing for performance. It is an expensive box for a conical filter, period. There isn't one serious tuner which is using or is even looking at this fancy box.
Dion
