Talking Air box mod equals HOLY CRAP!!

I cant believe how much better my truck feels after cutting the bottom out of the airbox and adding a K&N filter this morning!

Before the mod ...
I could line the truck up straight, get rolling up to 15 or 20mph and stab the throttle, sometimes the tires would spin a little and sometimes they wouldnt. It then shifted into second without any scratch or spin at all.

After the mod....

This morning after the mod I went back to the same stretch of road, got rolling 20mph and stabed the gas again...HOLY CRAP!! The tires imediatly started spining hard and before I knew it I was sideways. WHOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I rode it sideways for about 20 feet leaveing two solid black marks behind before it shifted into 2nd...AND KEPT SPINNING!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Needless to say I repeated the test several times..ROFL
I am completely tickled with my truck now and I still cant believe how much that simple mod improved power.
Before today my truck NEVER spun into second gear.

I highly recommend this mod to anyone who wants some cheap, easy horsepower.

BTW..Incase you are wondering, the airbox is the only mod I have....so far. lol

Cool

Andy,

That's the same setup I ran until the 90mm MAF was installed. If you look at you boost gauge you should see a higher reading.

Thumbs up Modded Airbox

Andy G
This is what i have found out also with my modded airbox, you will lose some blower whine by doing this but will be happy with the results at the track! The biggest difference as you stated and i have found out is the truck feels noticeably stronger from takeoff!

Congrats on a strong truck. If thats the only mod (no chip), then you have the cut-out between shifts. Holy Moly Batman, you chirp the tires

It not only chirped the tires it spun'em pretty good in second. A couple of times it dumped the boost and it fell in its face but for the most part it did real good.

I'll be fixing the boost dump issue real soon.

Just unplug the boost dump module..........it shouldn't throw any codes........mine hasn't and I unplugged it after a month of owning it.

Yah, let's hear some more info about this. Where is a good place to cut? What do the dealers about this mod?

I'll probley unplug it for the time being but Id really rather just get a plastic T and reroute the vac hoses.

Heres what i did...
I removed the whole top of the box from the truck by unscrewing the clamp that holds the black rubber intake hose to the upper half. Also dont for get to disconnect the air temp sensor on the back side of the upper box.

Remove the filter.

With the filter gone you will have the bottom of the box right in front of you. I removed about half of the bottom of the box on the side thats closest to the motor.

Drill holes{I drilled 1/2 inch holes so I could get the saw blade in} in each corner of the box bottom. Then I used a small hacksaw to saw between the holes.

make sure you get all the shaveings out then put in your new filter and put the top back on.

Its a real easy job and took me about 30 minutes.

On a side note...
The K&N came with a gasket that sticks to the top half of the box to get a better seal between the top of the box and the filter.
I damn near never got the top to fit back in place because the seal is so tight. If I had it to do over again,Id leave the gasket off and see if I could get a good seal without it. If I could, then I wouldnt use the gasket.

Air Box

Andy G. Couple of newbie questions. You didn't mention it, I assume you hooked the ait temp sensor back up? Any problems with the MAF? Where is the Boost Dump Module? Sorry about simple questions. Does anyone have the K&N Filter Number for a '01 or will the earlier filters fit?

Good questions
Soap gave you the pic of the boost dump module.
You wont have any MAF problems at all.
The air temp sensor screws into the upper half of the box. Just unplug it,and yes be sure to plug it back in when you are finnished.

The K&N part# is 33 2140 1
