Yes just half. Look at the second pic Don Bolt posted above. Can you see the ridge that basicly devides the box in half. I started at that ridge and remove the area below it. {where Don has his tubeing} The other side of the box sits almost on top of the inner fender and wouldnt allow much airflow anyway.

I recently did te same mod on my stock 01' What a diffence it makes. I cut 12 equaly spaced and in a straight line 1/2 inchin diamete holes. It made a huge diffrence. i would recomend this mod to anyone.

I like the idea of drilling the multiple holes in the bottom. How much difference do you think you would notice between just cutting the bottom out vs. doing what Don'sBolt did with the tubing, etc. Up to 780 miles so I'm itching to start adding power mods. Just Zainoed today(still have 2-3 more coats to go) and have already got windows tinted, bedrug installed and lowering shackles waiting for a spare moment.

Drilling multiple holes would probley be just as good as cutting one big one and it would look better although nobody would ever see it...lol
Dons Bolts setup would be better in that it would pick up cooler air plus it gives you a little ram air effect but Id personally be a little worried about rain water getting into the airbox.

I have not done anything to the airbox yet, but plan on doing something by this summer. It is pretty obvious with our trucks that by allowing them to breathe better improves performance. Anyway, I have been eyeing all the different setups for ram air. When I first bought my L, I was just gonna get a K&N cone filter and slap it on there with a conversion kit for about $100. But, by doing this, most of the air that goes into the intake is hot air from the engine compartment. In my opinion, there is no benefit in having more air into the engine if it is hot air. I like Don's Bolt setup in getting the air from the front and creating a ram air. Did you make this yourself, or is this a setup from one of the tuners? Personally, I am looking for the best wat to get the maximum amount of cool, fresh air into the intake at the lowest cost. There was a post the other day for a dual ram air setup, although impressive, a little too pricey for me.

Hey Jeremy, I see you live in North Pole. My wife lived in North Pole too. She lived at 3652 Silverleaf. She left in '96, misses it too. Did you grow up there or did the service bring you up there?

I see Volant has released their fresh air box for the Lightning (www.volantperformance.com). I think it's around $250. Anyone got one of these yet?

I cut the bottom out of the box, from right by the two lugs on the base that hold it in place, over to the passenger side edge. Picked up about 1.5 pounds of boost with that and the K&N filter, plus it looks stock from the outside.

As for the Volant... I didn't know we had 5.2L engines in our L's... heh

Has anyone gone from cutting out the airbox to immediately trying a Ram air intake? How did they compare? Any real benefit to buying a ram air or would home made be as effecient? Want to increase air very soon, just want to do it the best way. Thanks

Redneck Ferrari-

Got to North Pole in November 1999 thanks to the United States Air Force. It was -32 degrees the day that we got here. Have seen it as low as -52 though! Anyway, we like it here in Alaska, just would rather live in Anchorage.
