At 16, I bought a 1978 Oldsmobile Omega for $200. My old man insured it for me but I had to pay him $25.00 a month. The Omega had a 305 and the only mod I performed was flipping the air filter cover over. 
When I got out of the Corps, I had no money (1 to many trips to Australia) and I needed a car and my mother, God bless her heart, helped me financially buy a car. I felt bad about accepting her money but her logic was she didnt have to pay to put me through college so it was not a big deal. I still have that car (commuter\beater) and I am gratefull still for her help.
