i can now be added to the list, #3..... started hearing a tick but only when #3 would fire, didnt think a sparkplug like a dumb ***, thought it was just an exhause leak, well i had to make a trip about 160miles, truck ran fine the hole way, ticking didnt get louder, got to my place, turned her off for about 5min wile i stopped at a store, go to start it up and BOOM, sparkplug blows out snapping my coil in half and stripping the cylinder head out. i have very little money and im wondering if any of you have done one of those retap kits and how hard is it? i saw one other post on here but it didnt explain to much about how hard its gunna be. i have a pretty good grip on mechanics (obviously not enough though) and feel comfortable doing the work myself, just wanna know what im gunna run into here....

Add dabigguy to the list !!!

I'm going in !!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a 1998 Expedition 5.4 with 130k miles. I had a bad coil, but was not sure which one was bad, so I decided to buy all 8 from Ebay. Dealer wanted $100 each, AutoZone $60....I got all 8 shipped for $77.

Anyway, as we all know, these trucks do not have a lot of room, that, combined with the fact that I have hands the size of loaves of bread, this is not a fun job. I only replaced 5 in 5 hours and called it quits for a while. well.....9 months later (still haven't replaced 6,7,8), I start hearing a ticking noise like I have an exhaust manifold leak. It wasn't a that!!! The #3 plug decided to leave the vehicle at 10pm on the interstate. Fortunately, I was only 3 miles from home and did the Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang home. Yup, blew the plug and took the threads along with it.

I found someone that had purchased the TimeSert kit and was kind enough to rent it to me. I'm going to tackle this job tomorrow morning (Happy 4th of July)!!! I'll post the results, hopefully by noon, tomorrow.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated !!!

I was driving home from work this past Thursday and POP. It was so loud I thought it was my tire(hoping it was one of the tires). Then my truck started to run like if it was missing. Luckily I was down the street from my house. I opened the hood and saw the coil out and the rubber park just mangled. It hit the fuel rail but didn't damage it. The plug that blew was the #2 I think. It was on the passenger side second one back from the front.

My 99 blew 2, first was #2 on passenger side which blew out as I was pulling out on a busy road.. not good. Had it repaired then a year later #4 on passenger side popped out. That one blew out right when I was starting truck. But I did have fair warning.. heard the legendary exhaust leak sound but couldn't find a leak. I ended up taking cab off truck and replacing both heads, I saved alot of money since I'm a tech Truck is running better than ever, but that could be due to the long tube headers I installed while I was replacing the heads

Blew #8 last night on the freeway. It hit the rubber fuel line just aft of the fuel rail and ruptured it. Sprayed fuel everywhere, which was then ignited by the coil which was flopping around. Made for an impressive fireball, but now my favorite truck of 9 years is a total.

Fix those things when you first hear the leak, and carry a fire extinguisher. All that plastic in the engine bay burns faster than you think.

The reason why i will not buy another

THIS ISSUE IS THE REASON WHY I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER FORD.
2002 F150 King Ranch 5.4 36500 Miles passenger side 2nd from back blows out.
Spark Plugs never touched.
Bad Ford design- No Question.
Ford Responsibility - No Question.
Did Ford take responsibility - No Way.

So. Cal Senior tech who travels the US fixing these repaired -slimserted bad cylinder / torqued ALL to 30 ft.lbs. and said youre good.
$900.00 out of pocket

I know the company made alot more than that when I purchased the truck.

In this case I will let my money talk and I am walking.
So much for my buy American ideals.

Don't blame Ford. Maybe next time you'll pay attention to what your doing. - Maybe (?)

#6 blew out on mine Friday evening, on the way to a boating weekend with buddies. About 2 1/2 hours from home loaded with gear and towing the boat. I was 30 min away from hooking up with a bunch of 100 mph + boating grease monkeys. I decided to push on slowly with the bang bang clang going on.
I made it. After some searching in the dark we found the plug, the boot and smashed coil.
The next day I found a Ford dealer an hour away and had the truck towed. By 2:00 on Saturday- the dealer called and it was ready to go.

Including the tow - $500.00 CDN

The service rep received my call like i was ordering a pizza. Sounded like they do this repair all the time. She was able to quote me a price instantly.

I assuming that this is Very common.

Funny - I've never heard anything about this in the news - like the Toyota situation lately. I guess because it won't kill too may people?
