JDM's 01L Engine Blew???
SCC2000L-Thanks for posting that! I also remember Sean telling me Saturday afternoon that they were testing the limits of the blower and the engine with a "proto type" lower pulley. He said he believed the blower was at its max level but only time would tell! Guess now we know they really were. This is why Jim didnt act surprised when it let loose! He told me this after I questioned him about the upper pulley on Jims 01! It looked smaller than my metco upper. So I found out that Jim's upper was a true 2# pulley and my metco was only a 1#!!! Man, I was upset cause I was told my metco was a 2# when I bought it!
So all of you with the metco uppers.......its only a one pounder!

I got the privlidge of meeting with Jim and his crew when they were out in Ennis this past weekend.
Either he or Shawn was telling us that they were testing the limits of the engine and the dual blower pulley setup they had and they were trying to break the truck on purpose to see what she could and couldnt take. On a few occasions they both noted to us that they thought the rods were the weak link in these motors. In light of what they told us and what happened at FFW it looks like they definately know what they are doing and I have the upmost confidence in Jim's abilities.
God bless the US!

It sure looks like they did find the limit of the trucks motor. I have heard in the past the Rods are the week link in our motors. This winter when I put my truck away, I may just have to beef up some of the engine internals including the connecting rods.
I am glad all of you Texas guys got a chance to meet Jim, he is a class act.
Thanks
Don
There are times when we need to push these motors to the outer limits, and of course this only raises the risks of engine damage. When we combine a couple of pulleys to make more boost, lower A/F ratio's to further increase power, and add Nitrous like many of us here have and plan to do, what do we expect, it's bound to happen sooner or later.
As many of you know.....when you take a TRUCK of this weight, and ask it to run 11's, it's going to take it's toll. And as seen here it has. But like many have stated, this engine damage could only lead to useful information for all of us, and especially for JDM ENGINNERING. I'm sure They will come back with a stout motor, and continue where they left off.
Sounds like all of you Texan's had a great time, and I am sure many have improved on their best ET's.

Everyone,
Rest assured that Jim@JDM will let us all know what happened to his engine.
Until it is removed and analyzed we cant make any assumptions.
I can tell you that each side of the block has a few holes in it. The upper 1/2 looked still in tact.
As I am not an engineologist I cannot make even begin to know what the cause was.

A few week ago I lost 3 rods, one went through the block, one went through the oil pan and one fell in the pan. What a mess it makes on the track
I was watching my air/fuel gauge and I was in the rich side when all I heard was a bang and smoke blew all over.

Tell Jim to get a stock 5.4, out of an old Xcab F-150. they are good for low 10's on boost alone. since you guys were at Ennis, i'm surprised you didn't get a Texas asskickin courtesy of one of these family totin manure haulers
Jim@JDM,I'm very sorry to hear about the mishap.I don't have any performance mods on my truck yet.If I do,I'll probably go with a chip from JL,for whatever reasons I have. However,I do appreciate the pioneer work you and all the tuners have done.I have a lot of respect for all you guys.It was a brave thing for you to take your truck to the great state of Texas,(thats where i'm from)untested.I did'nt realize just how brave until I saw this post inparticular.I cannot imagine being scrutinized, for every victory and failure,as you guys are.Every attemt at progress criticized by the vultures in the wings, praying for failure. It reminds me of a motorcycle daredevil, at monster truck show.Everyone wants to see him miss the ramp.If my job was bent on this type of condemnation,I would certainly move on to another career. You must be very strong of character to continue with this adversity.Godspeed.

Jim is a class guy and knows his stuff.Engines blow and things break, but as long as we try to make our L's as stable as possible that's the chance that is taken.Jim has always been there to talk, help solve problems or potential problems and we will all learn from his experience,so be patient and let the guy get home and see what broke, and what can be done to prevent it in the future.
How many guys do you know that drive 2000 mile and help guys put mods on their vehicles, give the guy a break!!!!
Yes I'm pro JDM,and think Jim is a great guy as is Johnny L.
We need to give these guys credit, they help us make the power we do and go as fast as we go.

Skank Dog - I hope you are not insinuating that I was bashing Jim@JDM?
1. My L is stock - NO MODS
2. I do not know, nor have I talked to Jim, JL, OR Sal.
I was merely speculating. I do know that JDM is/has talked about a new blower.
I personally have been involved with race teams and blown many very expensive engines. That is how you find out what the weak link is. Although it dosen't take a think tank full of engineers to tell you that a 6+" rod is a WEAK LINK.
Anyway, I have no beef with you Skank Dog. Just want to be clear.

redneck- Maybe I took it wrong, but it looked like you were insinuating he "may" have had this bigger blower on his truck. I just wanted to make it clear that I knew for a fact it was not. When I know beyond a shadow of a doubt the truth, I'll stand up for that individual, in this case Jim. No beef with ya brother, just lettin' ya know what I know.
Depending on your perspective, I either left to early or just in time. Had to get back to KC and left around 4pm. It was great to talk with everyone and put names with faces even though I've forgot a few. I wouldn't wish a blown motor on any a-hole much less guys on this board and especially Jim.
I pulled up early Sat. and he directed me to a spot and started introducing me to folks. Brian K - thanks; JDM folks thanks so much; Justin, Rodney and to many others it was a pleasure to shoot the ***** with you guys. I wish I had more time to meet everyone.
Had some work done on my L by JDM and there are two things:
I'm making alot more HP than my previous 383 rwhp -- almost scarey. I'll dyno this Saturday.
My truck doesn't like crappy 91 octane anymore; a price I'm willing to pay to get the gains I think I got. I'm ready to get my suspension sorted; buy some slicks and start racing. It has been a long time since I used to run a fast (at that time) 74 Z-28. I hope I remember how to do it!

It was nice meeting everyone also. I am sure we will meet again sometime.
I am sure thinking about changing my rods when I do my heads/cams/headers trio. Just to be on the safe side.
I learned a lot of new interesting things this weekend. Meeting and talking to other L owners is a must when you are trying to make your truck faster.

NEEDFOURSPEED- Hey buddy!! How's that truck running? You had to have noticed a HUGE difference with everything you had JDM do to it!
It was nice meeting you along with everyone else and shooting the s***. I still cant believe you got the shaft on that 00 cargo light on your 01!!! LOL!! Its funny but it isnt. It isnt because now you have to make a trip to the dealership, but it is because it wasnt me it happened to!!!!
LOL!!!
I know mine runs ALOT better!! Big difference! I was grinnin' all the way home.
Justin- How many beers did you have to give that guy to squeeze him for more tips and tricks? LOL!! I know I saw you make two beer runs to the trailer!!! Good to talk to ya again! Let me know how that new JDM chip works out for ya.

Put some 100 octane in last night to be safe and went out for some "testing." I'm having a little idle issue that I need to get sorted, but, there is a huge difference in performance. The reburn was worth 20 hp according to most and then you add the 2lb pulley and Billet T/B. All I have left at this point (motor-wise) is to put on my electric fan.
I'm going to hit the dyno on Saturday and will let everyone know.
Justin - Good luck with the cams and heads; so far nobody seems to have had alot of success. But then again squeezing the last bit of power out of a motor are never easy or cheap. I spent several thousand dollars on the heads for my Ducati to get the last 3-4 HP out of it. It was worth it to me.
Next mod will have to be a bigger blower instead of the NOx. Just my preference; not a comment about guys with gas!
