LightningLisa and Filter Kits in General
Reminds me of my 2-stroke/4-stroke motorcycle roadracing days where you had carbuerators (spelling?). Some of you don't know what that is!!! There was a `slide' and it had a `cutaway' that was purposely designed to create the `venturi effect' whereby the incoming air was accelerated into the intake system as a primitive supercharging technique to maximize the intensity of the explosion that would consequently drive the piston downward.
There were many different cutaways on the slides depending on the type of engine performance you were after. The aftermarket tuner would select the appropriate dimensions of the intake system (sound familiar?) such as intake size opening/type of filtration, if any/pilot jet/main jet/power jet/needle taper/needle position, and so on.

Sal, not to try to start an arguement here, but how is it possible for a 3.5 inch inlet to flow as much air as a 4 inch inlet? The 80mm mafs was exactly the same size as the 3.5 inch inlet you used. The 90mm mafs are exactly the same size as the 4 inch inlet used in the JL & JDM air kit. So how could the 1/2 inch difference not be a restriction on the 90mm mafs if you use the 3.5 inch inlet from your 99-00 kit. This just seems to defy logic!
Hankfan, it's not a matter of flow, it's a matter of velocity. Look at it this way. If you took a garden hose, with nothing screwed on the end, and turned the water on, it comes out , but it comes out slowly. If you now screw a nozzle on the end, the nozzle is smaller but yet the water comes out at a much faster rate. While the opening of the 90mm is 4 inches, the inside bore is closer to 3.5, and then it has the vane which makes the overall inside surface area even smaller. So as long as your inlet source is not smaller than the surface area of the main bore of the meter, you don't have a restriction on the inlet side. Does that help?
Paul, I don't make those older kits anymore, since nobody wanted them when the 12" filter kits came out. And I don't plan to go back to making them, but I do have a few slightly used kits here I'll sell for cheap if anyone wants to do some testing of thier own. Our current filters kits as you know use the 12" filter, and adapters custom made to our specs to mate with whichever meter you have. I run this filter on our 01 test truck. I run it because I sell it, and therefore it must meet my standards for performance. If I felt the new setup HURT performance, I wouldn't sell it. The upcoming FASTair system was designed to get optimum performance out of the current 12" setups.

THE POINT!!!
Sal and lightning owners, This was not intended to start a filter kit war I really don't know if the two kits would show any gain over the other one or not......... but here is the bottom line we do feel strongly that sal offers a good products period!!!!!! We are not going to debate the size of the kits with sal or anyone. We ordered a kit for the 01 and thats what we wanted ,if we would of known that we would of had to pay $45 more to get what we wanted in the first place, WE FOR SURE WOULD OF PASSED ON THE KIT AT THAT TIME, UNTIL YOU HAD THE 4" TUBE MADE !!!!! After it was sent to us we talked and you said it would be fine to exchange it so, we left it at that. We would of never posted what we did last night until we read your reply to Ebbsnflows post... You told him he would need a different filter kit for his 00 if he went over to a 90 mm maf you told us it would be fine for us to keep the 99,00 kit we have on our 2001 which we all know has the 90mm maf from factory. That is where we drew the line either you do or don't need the 4" tube for the 90mm maf period!!!!!! Ebbsnflows e-mailed us and wanted our kit after we posted it for sell because we bought a used JDM's of the net for our 2001. We didn't want to be hassled with returning it after we talked , just felt like you didn't want to exchange and the $45 dollars more that you wanted we felt was VERY UNPROFFESIONAL of you after we have been NOTHING but nice to you and PSP. All in all you offer good products as well as JDM and JL but we would like for you to give the same advice to everyone and that was the reason for our post .
off topic, Ebbsnflows we got your e-mail that you still want the 99,00 filter kit we have for sale since you are not changing over to a 90mm maf right now. We will get that out to you and e-mail you the tracking # thanks kevin and lisa

P.s. This was a joke!
my original 9" PSP air system is a consistant one tenth quicker than my airraid/12" big mouth air system. i also have the J/L cold feed system. this is on a 99L with stock maf. i bought the 12" filter to be trendy, and it was too large for the PSP, so i bought the AirRaid to take advantage of the huge volume of air the 12" Big Mouth filter could deliver.

Testing
I have the 90mm MAF + tube sitting in a box in the garage. As soon as I get back from this trip I will take it to the track and swap it back to back and post the results. I have the old style PSP inlet and PSP 4-way chip with one setting already calibrated for the 90mm. I was planning on doing this at the F-150 ralley this weekend. Unfortunately duty calls and I will not be able to make it
