I use the Bel 985 and am very happy w/it. Valentines are also great units, but very pricey in comaprison and IMHO don't work any better. I have also used the 865 unit and it worked well, too. It is currently still in service in my car.

I hope this helps...

The Valentine 1 always seem to garner top marks in the comparison tests.
It's the brain child of the same guy who developed the orignal Escort & Passport detectors.
I've previously had BEL, Cobra, Uniden and a couple others and personally I thinks the Valentine is the best detector I've owned.
I drive a lot of highway miles running at 80 to 90 mph, and this things has saved my a** countless times. Although with a skillful cop using instant-on radar were all dead meat.

I've had several brands of detector over the years. Only the Bel and Valentine1 are worth purchasing. THeir detection quality is about the same. I sprung for the V1 and here;s why:

Direction Indicator
This indicator tells you where the radar signal is relative to your vehicle. It can tell you if the cop is ahead of you, behind you, or to the side. You can also tell if the cop is following you, stationary, or moving the opposite direction based on how quickly the direction indicator changes. For me, the standard detectors are frustrating because they tell me that a signal is present but I'm still left to peer around until I get a visual on the cop. This alone makes the V1 worth the extra money.

Bogey Counter

The valentine 1 can tell you how many signals its tracking and which is the strongest. This is invaluable for when the cops set up a multiple-car trap. THis saved me just the other day when i passed a cop with someone pulled over. the guy in the lane next to me accelerated but I didnt, knowin that there was one signal behind me, but another still ahead.

Since switching to the valentine1 from a top of the line uniden, I have gotten no tickets for speeding while I had the detector on. (just never turn it off!)

One of the nice things about the V1 is the ability to have it upgraded when something new is released by Valentine. I could be wrong but I don't believe any of the others do that and that IMHO pretty much makes the others throw away. It doesn't mean that they don't work but you end up chucking a couple of hundred dollars in the can every couple of years. Also there are not too many other models that I have seen in this price range or lower that have a remote that allows you to move the display down where others can't see it.
.05 worth

Hey mjb,
Why do you get the break? I thought you and your "brothers" are there to uphold the law. If you give me a ticket for speeding then you should get one for speeding also. We all know its just for revenue. So why don't you get the same penalties on insurance ect you bestow on others? Take your badge and place it in your ......

The guy next door is a law man. He drives fast everywhere he goes. I just love it when the police won't even follow the laws they expect us to follow. Classic case of do as I say, not as I do. Oh well, I guess it's just one of the perks that goes with the job.

Hwy (and all),

This is kind of off topic but along the same lines.

Prior to Law enforcement agencies switching to the Crown Vic, I bought a 1991 caprice classic that was a former police car.. It was in decent shape inside and out, only one repaired hole in the roof, all white, spot light, LT-1 Motor, Heavy duty everything, pretty nice for the price. The tranny was shot. That was expected for a chebbie.

A couple of friends and I drove it from Indy to Daytona for the 500 traveling nearly 100 the entire trip (no radar detector). I was nappin as we were going through Atlanta at about 2:00 am and heard a sudden "OH SH&T!" Obviously, I woke up inquiring as to the nature of the fecal reference. We passed a trooper clocking traffice from the shoulder blasting about 120. Not even a single look. We still joke about that to this day. Slow traffic in the hammer lane, a little spot light worked GREAT. M_O_V_E

The local constabulary constantly waved (I waved back of course) as I could pass for a law enforcement individual (shades, black leather jacket, constantly clean vehicle, etc)

Driving an "L" makes me feel like I am in the other side of the fence. Oh well...

Then why write the ticket at all???
In my opinion its called hypocrisy. A doctors fees have nothing to do with the "law". Unless you don't consider speeding part of the "law". If thats the case then just tell people to slow down. Do you care what it costs others for your discression??? Do you want the streets safer??? Or do you want to meet your quota?? Or get an attaboy??

I have a BEL Vector.

It works really well.

I bought a V1 and returned it because it performed no better than the BEL besides the fact that the V1 had the pointers and boggy counter.

My $0.02.

These cops are all the same, I had a friend telling me that when he was a cop some of his cop buddies had pulled over other officers that were off duty and drunk as can be. He said they let them go 95% of the time.
They ended up getting rid of my buddy during his probation, a direct quote from his superiors " your too damn smart to be a police officer, we know you won't be happy in the years to come so we feel its better if you quit now."

Now do you understand where "mjb1206" is coming from with that Professional Courtesy BS.
