my motor woes
There will be a post here shortly on SVTP about my dealings with JLP. I know how I was treated. I will be 100% honest. JL helped me a lot, sent me numerous tunes to try and fix it. He came up short, and when I pointed it out he flamed me. You judge from there. I don't believe Mike is lying. My truck JLP motor used just under 4 qts in 900 miles, while using HIS tunes. The motor was BRAND NEW. A COMPLETE LONGBLOCK timed and put together By JLP. So Say what you will, Another person I know that bought a motor in the same month had the same problems as me??? Whats the deal? I am thru posting on this topic, all I can say is I feel sorry for MIKE.
But on the other hand is JL really shown how much of an A$$ he really is by SUEING his customer??? WOW.

sounds awful fishy
I dont post on this site but I need to say something on behalf of JLP I shipped my truck to him he built my truck from the bottom up I spent alot of money, the engine he built me does NOT! burn oil runs smooth and produced excellent numbers Ive put over 3000 miles on my JLP motor and after me detonating the hell out of it the only victim was 6 denso plugs I changed them out and the motor runs great again. I call John at all times of the day for advice and help and he answers and takes the time to help me even on the holidays, to tell you all the truth there aint many mechanics that answer there phone on the holidays. He is not a bad guy but when you acuse someone of something and bash there bussiness you will get burned. I hope you sort out your problems Mike and get your truck running I didnt post to start a flame war just wanted to add my .02

LOL....I don't believe ol JL has enough money to hire an attorney to sue anyone. It sounds cool and all...kind of like saying...I'm gonna kick your ****...LOL. But put into actual practice get's real damned expensive. Any decent attorney will want a huge retainer up front....they sure as hell aren't going to take the case for part of the winnings. At least not when the person being sued is just some Joe Smoe pickup truck dude with the usual yearly income. Even if he wins...LOL...which he won't, since he did a bit of slandering himself when he chastized your character, there won't be any real money changing hands. Now, for the sake of argument, let's say you sue him for selling you a $h!t motor...good luck proving that one...by the way. Now his big time TV Guide lawyer is eating up revenue while fighting on two fronts.
Now who knows...he may pay some lawyer to send you a cease and desist letter. Means nothing but scares $h!t out of some folks. This will cost him a couple hundred bucks.
Yeah...this is focking laughable...."You'll being hearing from my attorney"...who hoo...that is a good one. I just can't quit laughing....
Dude...some advice for you. If you have proof that he somehow did you wrong. Hire your own attorney and talk to him/her about what legal recoarse you have. JL is the one providing a service in exchange for payment....as the customer...your hand is much stronger. That is, if you have been screwed over here.
Rocks

the engine builder's perspective (kinda long)
Hi,
We are SD Concept Engineering, Inc.(SDCE). We are a performance shop building all brands of american muscle, specializing in forced induction. Like JLP, we have many motors and complete cars out there that range from 400hp to 1500hp.
We are not here to bash, slander or demean anyone. There are two sides to every story, and we made sure to hear them both.
Here's how we see it. Mike came to us with his short block and asked us to look it over, assess the damage, share what we felt was the problem, and explain what we would do to fix it so it didn't happen again. He told us it burned 5.5 qts of oil in ~2000 miles. We were told it was a JLP short block. We were given brief info as to why it wasn't brought back to JLP for diag. Mike told us we are local to him making it easier and he wanted a second opinion because he was starting to feel he was getting a run-around.
Mike posted a few comments here about the problems we found. His comments weren't entirely correct. He was not "lying", he was just so upset and overwhelmed by the info that was given and the extent of the damage, he maybe didn't hear it all correctly hence, he didn't share it all correctly!
We did ask Mike why he continued to drive the truck after knowing it consumed oil. He now knows that wasn't the smartest thing to do, and ultimately, that is what cost him the motor.
Here are the results of what we found.
1.spun rod brngs. 4-7-8/ lack of oil.(the last to get oil, 3-4-7-8, always melt first)
2.Scored bores: Most likely from debris in engine.
3-4-7-8 heavily scored, #1 has fairly deep scratch caused by good sized particle stuck in piston skirt just under oil ring
3.Rings lined up on 3 pistons: 2 also had compression rings lined up. Slim chance they were installed that way-BUT NOT LIKELY. Rings do move around, and based on our experience, they tend to do it more on boosted apps. This is why we DO NOT use stock type moly gap (conventional) rings.
4.cylinder bores out of round: based on the ring wear pattern on the bores there were 4 or 5 high spots in every bore. Could be caused by several things (in no specific order of importance) 1st, not using a deck plate, or using a deck plate improperly. 2nd, if the block was brand new, we've seen them "move" or "shift" in the first couple of heat cycles. They aren't "broken in" enough to fit bore-to-ring
5.rings not seated: based on ring and bore wear patterns. Could be caused by all the above or heavy oil film on cylinder walls insulates the ring from the piston wall stopping the rings from wearing into the bore properly. We've also seen rings not seat from just the opposite- it could've been too rich on break-in, gas-washing the cylinders initiating too much wear in some spots.
6.oil pump scored: debris in motor
7.crank worn: needs to be ground caused by lack of oil
8.lifters and tensioners: replace all - full of debris
9.Heads: 4 "bad" valves found undersized by .002 caused by improper guide sizing, or dirty assembly, and/or improper rocker assembly.
10.valve seal problem: We have seen this alot on mod motors. The heads are most likely the prime source for Mike's initial oil consumption problem. Ford has revised the seals they use 3 or 4 times now due to oil consumption issues-
In JLP's defense, I don't believe any of us are in this business to intentionally screw anyone. JLP has hundreds of motors out there. How many of them are problem motors? From what I've seen and heard, a very small percentage. That's not to take away from those that have had issues and how they are handled. That is a different issue entirely that should be handled between the motor owner and JLP.
Issues do come up...And yes, even we are human. We are asked on a daily basis to push limits...and it doesn't always work as planned. We don't always hear the "correct" details to make an accurate decision - as witnessed here in Mike's "slightly off" description of what we told him.
We've learned some stuff here, and hopefully someone else does, too. From what we can gather, Mike posted here to see if anyone else had similar problems to his and to vent. He should've approached it a bit differently and the same could be said about JLP(btw, jlp, you owe us a beer for your
comments directed at us in your post!J/K). Long and short of it is JLP was willing to look at the shortblock before it "broke" to evaluate the problem. The ball was then in Mike's court and he chose not to go that route for his own reasons. JLP cannot be held responsible for that.
ok.we're done.please don't bash us, or call us names!
Hopefully it will work out in the end for all those involved. We'll do what we can...

Ok so the main problem was caused by lack of oil because of the heads. Im not much of a mechanic but I do check my oil once a week and at least change it every 2000 miles just in case and so far my motor isnt burning any oil I think that was Mikes first mistake not checking his oil regularly, second are those heads JLP heads or someone else's? If those heads were someone else's then I would be going after them if not then its another story, Looks to me the motor took as much as it could have taken and finally like any other motor took a dump, Im sure a stock engine would have gave up along time ago. The conclusion is Mike you should have contacted JLP about the oil problem and had it checked before it caused this problem and corrected it.This definitely wasnt the way to get things done.

I have read all the forums on this related thread.
Looks like JLP is owed an apology. Cheers to the shop that tore down the motor for being honest. As I understand, they were Patriot heads. NOT JLP.
This situation is not a JLP error, proof being said by the other shop that tore it down.
To anyone else that says he calls names to his customers and belittles them, it's funny how those people only post what they want everyone else to read and don't post ALL their initial comments to JL.
After reading the post from the other shop, can anyone blame JL for protecting his company??????????? I sure can't. I'm actually glad he has some hairy ones to stand up to it. Show's he's confident in what he does. Every vender has issues here or there, but I know they stand behind their products when they have one.
Peace, J.R.

Bad valve guides/seals = massive oil consumption,
Motor running dangeruously low on oil = scored internals,
Scored internals = even more oil consumption,
Oil in combustion chamber from guides = good recipe for detonation in power adder application,
Detonation = burned pistons/hurt rings.
Somebody mentioned that these were Patriot Heads on the thread starter's motor. I would like to know if this is true, as I just recently recommended a friend consider Patriots because I had seen some people on various threads running them, and their website looked like they had a pretty good gig going.
