Tragedy Strikes

I'm looking for a smiley that is crying it's eyes out.

There's only one way to say this, so I'll just come out with it... I wrecked my truck yesterday. I pulled right slap out in front of a Pathfinder. He was headed west on the road I was trying to pull out on and I was crossing his lane to turn east. There was a Chevrolet 2500 quad-cab --headed the same direction as the Pathfinder-- turning into the parking lot I was coming out of. It's a four lane hwy and when I looked left, all I could see was the Chevy. By the time I got in the Pathfinder's lane, he was right up on me. My brother said "Whoa!" so I looked over and told him "Sh*t! This is gonna hurt!". Half a second later, I'm pulling myself out of my newly wrecked L and crying becuase I have only been home from Iraq for three days.

So, long story short. Entire front-left susp. (Up and Low control arms, everything) Door, Fender, Hood, Windshield, Coolant Lines, Wheel, Front Fascia, Driver's headlight. All of it. The battery broke out of the battery box and some other garbage. I really have no Idea. I think the drivetrain is good. The guy at the dealership still hasn't given me an estimate yet. Maybe tomorrow. Any ideas on total cost. I'm not sure if Nationwide will total it out. Truck is an '03 with <9k miles.

Anyway, I hope they will fix it rather than total it out. I'd like to have it back. So if you're nice and you think they are going to total it out, just lie to me to make me feel better. Thanks guys. Hopefully I can remain a part of the Lightning community.

Oh man............I feel your pain just reading about that. If you got T-Boned...frame damage is a good possibility. If they total it, be sure to get all your mods, if any, off of it.

My son totaled his first car a couple years ago. I was so ticked off at him, I forgot to work out a way to get his expensive stereo out of it. The guy at the tow service enjoyed it, I'm sure.

Thank goodness you guys where not seriously injured. Getting hit from the side can be real screwed up.

Hang in there. I was victim to an old man running a red light while I was making a LH turn. I just got my estimate today.
before I tell you what its going to cost to repair my truck, take a look back at my pictures and see if you have more damage then mine:

last weeks thread

my estimate total is: $14,537 which is insane. Looks like I will have to start to look for a new L, because im not going to have them repair my truck, if its going to take 14k to get it back.

Hang in there, It sucks to be in this position.

John

Wink

Just wanted to let you know that my 2001 Lightning was hit by Nissan Altima in the Front End. Totaled the Nissan and took $12,800 to repair new frame front end etc. but was cheaper than paying the value of the truck. The repair has to exceed 75% of the value before they will total and a lightning takes alot of repairs to exceed that.

I hope you and your brother are OK.

ASAP, go to wherever they towed the truck and get all your personal proprerty and any bolt-ons from the truck. Do this before they transport the truck to a repair shop.

Otherwise, someone might take your stuff, and the yard will blame the body shop, and the body shop will blame the tow yard, and you will be SOL. Be very suspicious if the tow yard does not want you to access your vehicle.

I found out the hard way on this one. Accidents are bad enough without having some tow-yard rip you off.

kinda sounds like me when i had my 2001. i just got back from deployment and went home to get my truck from my parents, just got done putting 9K into the truck and drove back down to VA from MI... the 2nd night i was back in VA it was raining out and i came around a curve at night and a dog ran out in front of me... i swerved to miss the dog and when i came back into my lane the rear end kept sliding out from behind me.... i landed in a 4ft deep ditch doing about 35mph and twisted the frame in the front, airbags went off, windshield cracked, fenders got pushed back into the door jabs, cab got wacked out of alignment.... the insurance company ended up totaling it out, even though it took them 40 days to get around to decided what to do with the truck.. but as soon as i got the word i went out to a dealership and picked up a black 2003. i was able to get most of my stuff off of my 2001, with the exception of the cobra r water pump and electric fan and my ram air hood was all cracked up so i had to lose it. but now im happy they totaled it out, got a newer truck and a built engine in this one! i know how you feel, i threw up when i crawled out of my window cause i couldnt get the door opened. hang in there. hopefully it all works out.

Another piece of advice... if they do end up totaling it, find out what the buy back will be. You can bargain with them on the cost to buy it back as a salvage title. Sometimes it pays, especially if you have the time/ability to deal with the nuisance of having it around while you part it out.... or keep the parts for a built motor on the next one. I bought my Mustang back for $300... fresh 306 with all the goodies, World Class T5, and many more parts in tact. Parted it out and made another $6500 over the $9000 net they gave me. It's just a thought. Again, sorry to hear about the truck, but look at it this way: the fact that you guys are OK has made the condition of your truck your biggest problem. Things could've been much worse. Hang in there!

First off, "Welcome back from Iraq". I'm glad you made it home safe.

Secondly, thankfully your brother and yourself weren't hurt.

Third, as much as we all like these Lightnings. They are just a truck, and can be replaced. Be thankful your brother or yourself weren't seriously ingured.

WOW

Glad your ok. I'll tell ya, cars can be replaced. Lives can't.

My sister was in a bad accident last week. Drunk driver bounced off the car in front of her and hit her head on. Doing about 50 in a 25. He was driving a f250 superduty. She was driving a focus. Guess who won?

Airbags saved her life. Kept the bumper of the truck from pushing the a pillar any closer to her head. He came right up over the hood!!!

I'm surprised how well that little focus held up. Ford cars man. Their safety feature have kept 2 of my closest to me alive. My girlfriend just over a year ago, and now this.

Hey guys. Thanks for looking at the bright side.

My truck looks exactly like yours, John. I have to go sign some paperwork tomorrow, so I will take some pics. My estimate was $4867.xx, and I can't get over that compared to yours. BUT I'm sure the estimate is open-ended. The guy I was talking to said it would be 2-3 weeks, but not to put it in stone.

I'll let you guys know what they say tomorrow. Thanks again.
