timing
Some post about it

This one had some detonation with the stock performance tune,
but mainly because he only has 91 octane available

Octane vs Timing seems to be the biggest factor with the off the shelf tunes, for some it seems perfect, but for others it can be dangerous

When I bought my Predator (at the same time as I bought my 6lb lower pulley), the Predator only had the Diablosport tunes on it, because as Rob02 said, you have to email your factory tune to your tuner and he modifies it and emails it back. So, in the meantime, I installed the Diablosport pulley tune. It was 19 degrees @ WOT if I remember correctly. I took out the maximum timing the Predator allows (because I was hearing detonation @ WOT) which brought me down to 17 degrees. I was still getting very light ping at the end of 2nd gear right before the shift.
I received my tuner's program and it is 16* and I have not heard any detonation since. So, for me here in Miami, with 93 octane (I only use Amoco or Mobil) 16 degrees is probably the maximum safe timing I can run. I haven't been able to go back to the track yet, but I haven't lost to another Lightning in my area yet. I'm hoping for high 12's on the F1's.

If your A/F was leaner than 10's, do you feel you would still be able to run as much timing? Do you think I should consider richening up my A/F to run more timing? Is there ultimately more HP that way, than leaner with less timing? My ultimate goal would be to run as fast as possible without nitrous.
Thanks.
Greg
Thanks.

Thats is Def the million dollar question ????
My guess is, yes because I am soooooooooooo rich
I DO get away with the timing I run on the street.
When I orig melted 3 plugs running mid 11's- low 12's A/F, I realized THERE WAS NO SAFETY MARGIN IN MY TUNE.
All it took was a slow down of the fuel delivery and good by
3 plugs, (it could have been the rods a sec later ???) TG it wasnt.
After that I knew I needed to build a little forgiveness in the tune so I went with the Multi Spark Ignition, colder Plugs, and richer AF.
As time went on I realized I did indeed run faster and faster
as I raised the timing up "a degree at a time". So YES IMO I feel more timing and more Fuel is as fast or faster, YET SAFER that being leaner with less timing.
By keeping it sooooo rich I am clearly giving up power,
but as Sal said when he Dyno'd it,
it's prob the fact that I run so rich at high RPM and high MPH
that is keeping the Rods in, hehehehehehe..............
Look at my dyno and you'll see I am very strong and fairly lean
right up to 4000 RPM or so, this gives me great power on the street and at low end, then when I get up in the boost and RPM's
where the most stress is on the Motor, I DROP OFF BIG TIME
We can correct this, but honestly I don't know if the motor can handle it, so I havent "YET"
Next time out I will be adding 25 more Nitrous HP which will help
those high numbers and hopefully bring me the best ET's yet ???
Notice from 4500 to 5500 RPM I lose 50HP and @ 150 ft lb of Torque. That is also when the A/F nose dives to 10.nothing.....
The larger jets will help this A LOT, only time will tell ???

The above gives one of the benefits of the alcohol injection kit I'm running. I have a KB and 16.5-17 psi of boost with 18 degrees of timing................on 91 octane. Besides some amount of cooling the alcohol gives a slight octane nudge but also richens up the A/F enough to get away with it. I was running 20 degrees with 16 psi and the alcohol kit but took a couple degrees out with the extra boost. The A/F is in the 10's with the kit on.
Is the motor a time bomb? Maybe, being that it's a stock short block. But the plugs look awesome and it seems to like the tune. I think leaning out and detonation (incorrect tune) is what's killing 99% of the trucks out there, not the stock rods.

When I put 25 more Nitrous HP and even more Torque through it next time out, we will once again prove that my Brothers....
Very impressive indeed camcojb
I've been asking and talking about it since KB's entered the L mod market, WHEN THE HELL IS SOMEONE GOING TO GROW ***** AND PUT SOME REAL TIMING BEHIND ONE.
I knew it would take a fluid injection to be able to do it.
My guess is, if you do it on a built block, run the injection and 18-20 degrees of timing, some serious boost, race fuel, and a rich tune, I bet you'd have a low 10, hi 9 sec L "OFF JUICE"
WOO HOO........
Your truck must be an absolute beast at WOT,
and I commend you for the set up your using

Thanks Rob. It runs good but I'm trying to do it with stock exhaust manifolds and cats which does hold me back some. Have LT's and hi-flow cats in the garage but hate the noise on a daily driven truck.
I'm going to dyno a friends car tomorrow and am going to run my truck also as I've never dynoed it with the KB. It will have 17 psi, 20 degrees, fat A/F, and 91 octane. I'll let you guys know what it does.

Just kidding man, as I agree with you and rob on this subject. So lets keep this thread going. I would like to learn more on the subject at hand.
Here's todays dyno results. And no, no rods hanging out of the block!
