timing

I went out today and did some data logging. I currently have the predator pulley tune and a 4lb lower. Made two runs up to begininning of 3 rd gear. I saw 18 degrees in both runs on the high end of second gear. (couldn't stay in it due to being on the street) so third gear was moot.

I've been reading past posts and concluded that 16 degrees was the best for running on the street?? So, I took 10% out and I am now showing 16 and an occassional flicker of 17.

I also richened it 2%, I'm waiting on a wideband before I adjust on that.

She still barks second and power seems about the same, I imagine Francis will keep the track closed wed's so I won't be able to test until probably friday!

Any one have similar experience?
Thanks,
Bryan

I just got a predator and started playing around with the data logging. Today, I was sitting at idle and my SPARK was bouncing around 21deg BTDC and yesterday I was logging it at idle and it was bouncing between 16 and 17. I haven't got out and logged it from a WOT run though...

Hey stalkee,
Look under "gas and ignition" and *spark advance. I usually * the rpm's so you can see when you wot it.

I've been meaning to buy an obd-2 book so I could better understand all those codes!

Bryan, sounds like you bought the predator with Diablo's tunes on it RIGHT ???
Not a Lightning Tuner ???

If thats the case, very smart move
Diablo is known for giving too aggressive of a tune with those units, thats why most buy them from Lightning Tuners.

Either way, Yes 16 @ WOT is a nice place to be, and still plenty strong. You can play with it a little and see about using more when you go to the track (use Race Fuel of course), but for around town, 16 is great.
What Octane are you running ?
No pinging or detonation with the 18 degrees ???

Good Luck

Hey Rob, then I shouldn't buy a predator from a tuner, I need to get it from Diablo?

Rob,
Yes I bought from a wholesaler.
Thanks for the input! I've ran this through the quarter probably 20 times and never heard any detonation. I used to run Sunoco 94 religously after my stupid cheap axx bought 87 during winter time! I do buy 98 octane sometimes usually just a couple of gallons to mix with the now 93 octane. Stuff costs $4.89/gallon.
My wideband should arrive later this week, then I'll tweek on the fuel.
Thanks,
Bryan

Then what the hell are we doing, lets pump that timing up a few more degrees and see how it really runs WOO HOO
J'K Bryan, so how's did it run with that orig tune at the track ?

Grimace, the "Off the Shelf" Custom Diablo Tunes are known for being aggressive. For many they'll be fine, but for some in higher altitudes and lower octane area's it can be a prob. You remember when they first hit the market, people were detonating all over the place, and yes a few even blew the motors with them.

I use to use off the shelf Diablo tunes in my chip back in early 02, I tried about 4 differant ones and hated one more than the next, one I had, ("Boob6K" or something like that was the file name)
shifted at 5700RPM and felt like someone was hitting me in the back of the head with a sledge hammer everytime it shifted second. Another hit the limiter each and every time you went WOT, and between all 4 I never got the performance I should have.

Switched to a Tuner, and immediatly picked up 3/10th's - a full 1/2 second in ET.
(I got to believe they're getting better with it after all these years)

Rob,
Best time to date is 13.06 with a 1.88 60ft. On really warm nights my times go up about 3/10's.
I really want to learn how to do these changes myself, maybe diablo has tech courses real cheap??

Did you ever hook your predator up to the diablo CMR DAT? I tried today with no luck, was hoping to see some streaming data logging. Wish I was more computer literate! (In my youth, bought that damn camshaft instead of the commodore 64! Mom was right)

Well, I am at about 1200 feet, and have 93 octane. Would a "tuner" diablo be better, or a unit directly from predator? I will eventually ( ) get a pulley and CAI. Is the standard 4# program too aggressive for my altitude and octane availablitiy?

I would talk to a few tuners before buying, there is a DEF advantage on buying it from a Tuner. I think what we found out is to have A TRUE custom program FOR YOUR LIGHTNING AND MODS,
you need to buy it from a Tuner and include the additional cost of a Custom Tune.

Of what I'm told the Unit CAN NOT be shipped to you with a Tuner
Custom Tune already on it, instead you get it, download the generic Diablo Performance Tune, then upload some info from YOUR TRUCK and e-mail that to the Tuner.
THEN the Tuner will create a true Custom Program FOR YOU and e-mail it back, for you to upload into the Truck.

"IF" you but it from Diablo, you can not go to them for this service.
I know some of the L Tuners do offer the unit with an additional
charge for the Custom Tune, and include the needed cables.

As for your Altitude and Octane, 93 is GOOD but I understand there are places you CAN NOT get it.
I do know A LOT of the Brothers "on the Other Coast" have had problems running the same programs we run here on this Coast.
Thats the reason most go to a tuner over the Company direct,
A Tuners Def has more on hand experience FOR THEIR PARTICULAR AREA and know what tricks and changes are needed for it.

Timing seems to be the big issue, if I didn't see it with my own eye's, I'd never believe my LOW TIMING program (the n20 one) showed a clear 19 degree's of timing when Sal Dyno'd it.
I also know there are hundreds if not thousands of L's out in Cali, and other area's that CAN NOT run that timing, or even get 93 Octane for that case. For them these "off the shelf" Diablo tunes will in most cases NOT WORK. Especially if some are showing what most consider VERY HIGH timing straight out of the box.
