Differental Cover Install

I am giong to chage the gear oil this weekend and need to double check how to install the differental cover. I believe all I need is a baed of black RTV on the mating surface of the cover. Is this correct or is there more to it?

I think he's asking what the torque specs are, not the definition of spec.

I used Superfords instructions & set mine to 30 foot lbs.

All I did was have a stock diff cover powdercoated.

There are gaskets available but it seems most people perfer good rtv. Make sure all old rtv is off and out of bolt holes and surface is clean. don't forget the friction modifier!!

It would be putting it lightly to say that the torque spec on these particular bolts is non critical.

however since the question was asked.

the specs on the differential cover bolts are:
45Nm or 33lb/ft

now if you want to be REEEEEEEEALY precise, there are more specs you might want to know...

Ford has a spec for the thickness of the bead of silicone that you use on the cover!

your silicone beads must be:
3.18-4.76mm (1/8-3/16 inch)

oh, and that's not all.

when filling your axle with gear oil, there is a spec for the fill level as well!

the oil level should be:
6.4-14.3mm (1/4-9/16 in.)
below the bottom of the filler hole.

does this answer everyone's questions on the specs?

BTW, this is not a joke. those are real and accurate Ford specs.

later,
chris

guess they have to call out something here! They can't just say put a bead, tighten the bolts and fill will oil oh by the way i have to take up for them as i am a mechanical engineer and am put in the same situation quite often. the things we call out should be common since but if we don't then some dumb a$$ comes back and says well you didnt' say that exactly!! my vent is complete!!
