Why couldnt the Lightning use a knock sensor? Reason i ask is i just installed a new 306 into my mustang and got the optional knock sensor because i run a vortech on it. wouldnt it be benefitial incase you do detonate? Just a thought.

They're diabled on our engines due to the engine and blower and additional noise it introduces...

...at least that's what I've read on here. I know a search will reveal that as well.

the blower sets off the knock sensor and retards the timing

i'm pretty sure that all ford truck 5.4's and 4.6's don't come with knock sensors.

Yes they do come with them and yes they are active unless your tuner has deactivated them.

I think that mine was deactivated from the factory because of the $&&%( piston slap.

it's not noise that you can hear, it's noise that the sensor can hear.

the sensor "listens" for the sound of spark knock in the engine, apparently the s/c creates noise that interferes with the proper opperation of the sensor.

I believe it is called a peizoelectric sensor, but it's been awhile, so I may be mistaken

yes, they do, here's a picture of one. see it hiding there under that metal coolant tube. it has a bolt holding it into the block:

the "RIGHT" side of the motor is Bank 1 on the passenger side, the "LEFT" side is the driver side. anything being described as left or right on a vehicle or engine is described as viewed from the driver's seat, not as you would see it if you were standing in front of the truck.

there are two sensors on the LEFT side of the motor, one is in front in the timing cover it is the CMP or camshaft position sensor, the one going into the head on the left side under the intake is the CHT or cylinder head temperature sensor. the knock sensor is in the very bottom of the valley, see above pic.

You are correct, they do come equipped on Lightnings, however you are wrong about them being "active". Lightnings do not use the knock sensor from the factory.

later,
chris
