Question Head Porting Question?

Got my heads over to the guy doing the porting work and we have a question. He feels like the swirl dam on the combustion side of the intake valve needs to come off. I have been told that it directs the air charge down to the center of the piston and you should grind it off. Have any of you guys got any info on this?? Obviously taking it down may improve intake flow but it was put there for a reason by Ford??

Thanks
Rob

your right it is there for a reason, but I will also point out that ford made a revision of that dam between the 99/00 heads and the 01/03 heads. The newer heads have a smaller dam in the combustion chamber (01' and up) also have a different part number, a different combustion chamber, the intake valve has been moved and also the finish around the valve seats is better on the newer heads. The valve doesn't sit down in a pocket with a big lip around it. Makes for better low lift flow.

Most of this info you will find in the latest MM&FF with pictures the rest of it I remember from somewhere else.

Good Info, never knew there was a change to the later model "L" head.

So if we can get the improved '01 and up style head with the new thread count on the 12/02 and later produced heads we all be set!

Exhaust, exhaust, exhaust.

If you are having the heads done. Spend your money on the exhaust side of the motor. Larger gains will be found there. If you can afford it, put in the largest exhaust valve in you can fit.

Have the porter work on the exhaust port. Intake flow is secondary on a blower motor. More intake flow is just a pulley away.

confidential?

did they not give you flow numbers? or did they provide numbers and then swear you to secrecy?

sounds fishy to me.

I wouldn't spend a couple of grand on heads without some numbers. just my .02.

later,
chris

Thanks for the Info!!
The guy porting my heads feels like he can definitely do them some good. When I get some flow numbers I will post them.
I have already invested in the larger Ferra intake and Exhaust valves. I am debating whether to change cams. I have had several reputable people tell me I will see no gains unless I go with a little more agressive cam.
If any one is interested the guy that is porting my heads is located near the Knoxville, TN area and he has a very good reputation with the local crowd for doing good work. He is presently doing some 4V head work for Robert Hindman, Fun Ford Mod motor champion, and he built the motor and ported the heads for Gene Hindman, NMRA Pure street record holder, 10.72. If anyone would like to get some contact info let me know.

The guy who ported my heads said that you shouldn't take it out. He did remove a little material on the back side of it. For what that is worth.
