How do i put a new ashtray and cupholder in?

When i bought the truck, it was missing the ashtray, so they ordered one for me, free of charge. What i didn't know was that i was getting a whole new assembly including the cupholders. I told them to just send it to my house because i'll be able to put it in myself.....oops, big mistake. I can't figure out how to get the old one out to put the new one in. I might just take it to the dealer to do it, at least they know what they're doing. I looked at it and it looks like i have to remove one of the dash panels to get in there.

seeing as how the search is down, you have to do this the hard way. Someone posted pics of the removal 6 to 8 weeks ago, so go back through the threads either here or general care. Basically, get a long very thin slotted screwdriver and push two tabs at the top of the cupholder (just inside the dash) If you get down on the floor and use a flashlight you will see the two tabs. Then remove the wire harness (for the ashtray lights)

Thats it.

You said it was just missing the ashtray, so why dont u just take the ashtray from the new one and clip it in the old cupholder?

I too have a 98. I have removed the cupholder to clean spilt coffee. The cupholder slides in and out on the side rails. The 2 tabs at the top of the cupholder are what prevent it from coming right out of the dash. NO DASH PANEL REMOVAL IS REQUIRED.

As I said earlier, get down on the floor and use a flashlight to actually look in at the top of the cupholder and you will see the 2 tabs that need to be pushed down.

Or, you can look for proper pics that someone posted 2 months ago.

It is so easy, you will say "that's it?" after you have done it.

I agree with J-150. No panel removal required!!!

Maybe 2000svt is referring to replacing the rails not just the sliding door/holder itself.

Here's my attempt to explain (just did it 5 min. ago!).

Pull door out to full extended position,
reach behind the door about 1" to the inside of each rail,
pull down on each tab and gently pull the door out, (these tabs should be seen on the new one you have so it should be easy to locate them)
disconnect wire and it is done!

To replace just line up the rails and push unit in.

You could use a small screwdriver and push down on these tabs but it's not required unless you got big fingers!

Good Luck... XLT_D.

to further what XLT Driver and myself have mentioned... imagine how you take out the ashtray... pull out to full and push the tab down, removing the ashtray. That's basically what you have to do with the cupholder.
