Exclamation ASHTRAY won't stay closed

Hi guys, first day on the site and loving it already!!
I just got a 2004 supercrew FX4 and have an issue with the ashtray.
It wont close.... it seems spring-loaded and stays open. Does anyone know how I can go about fixing it to make it stay closed? THANKS.

I am glad this was posted. I too just got an '04 FX4 less than a month ago and the ashtray stays open. If I have coins and my knife in it (ie weight) it will close if I do it just right, but will not open. I assume it is like those little pins that push into a clip that goes in when you press it, then press it again and it come open enough to release the previously help pin,...but there is no pin that I can see without taking the dash bezel off.

This has been cover here before, something like a spring becomming detached. You don't need to remove the radio bezel, the ash tray slides out completely

Do a search for "ash tray", you will see a wealth of info on how to solve your problem.

Good Luck

My ashtray was also sticking, one day I pushed too hard and something broke inside. Decided to replace with a new one ( cost around 80.00 thru Ford ). Easy to replace.

i just posted how to fix your cup holder it may help.

mercedes i know what your talking about my buddy has a stx 4x4 and it just has a big bin. if you wanted to swap it you will need two parts from ford a ashtray/cup holder and a half size bin. the bottom or the bin snaps in the ashtray has to little screws it shouldn't be a big deal just $$

As per my original issue... how do I get to the ashtray?
Do I need to pop off the radio bezel first? I don't want to be messing everything up if it isn't necessary.

I took mine apart to see the spring was fine, the mechanism that locks it in and opens it like a clicky pen is what is not working. The pin does not ride in the channel properly. I think it just looks too loose. I didn't have time to try and tighten the 2 screw that hold it together.
