The step in the cutoff keeps light out of incoming traffic's face and lights up signs better on your side of the road. You can't get rid of it unless you modify the cutoff shield, but that's unadvisable.

Hope that helps!
Mornin'!

Perfect answer!

Fellers, remember that yer OEM halogen reflectors also have a 'step', albeit a rather ill-defined and murky one. But in almost all halogen reflector designs, this 'rise to the right' is done to help light up the shoulder area on whichever side is opposite to the driver.

If you look at some of Matt's vidyas on TRS, when the initial alignment prep is being done using the blue painter's tape, he' marking the original halogen step to help align the new projector.

BTW, this is their only HID sticky over there and all of the quotes have come from there.
Thanks

And thanks for the explanation of the cutoff, both of you. I never questioned it because it seemed they all have it, glad to know now.

There's a guy over there that just put HIDs in his stock fog housings. He posted this pic:

Here is my response:

Man! That's some awful glare. I'd hate to be driving on the other side of the road as you with those on. Please don't tell me you drive around like that. Those stock halogen housings aren't meant for HIDs.
And then his response:

They honestly aren't as bad as the camera picked them up lol.

More blinding by the OEM HIDs than those fogs do
My response:

The difference is the OEM HIDs are in a projector and the light is contained and focused. There is also a built in cutoff shield. You see in your picture how even though your headlights are higher (obviously), you don't get glare from them like you do from the lower fog lights. That light from your fogs is going to shoot in every which way and blind everyone driving on the other side of the road. Just try walking about 100 ft forward in front of your truck. Notice that the cutoff from your headlights will save your eyes but those fogs are going to be scattered everywhere. It also just isn't a good look as it's just a giant glob of light that everyone else sees.
Annnnndd his final closing statements:

Oh I understand you completely man. But the picture is much more aggressive as far as glare than it really is. But the whole bumper is gonna be swapped for ADD Stealths so it's not permanent lol.

WHYYYYY would someone ruin a perfectly good looking truck with some awesome OEM HID heads by putting 8000k HID fogs in their stock housings.

I've seen that a few times around here. They try to match their HIDs in their heads. They have no idea what kelvin temp their heads are so they just buy blue because they see blue from the cut-off.
Cadillac around here has 8000k fogs with OEM reflector HIDs. Looks way out place.

At least that guy knows (somewhat) that he's throwing light all over the place.

I was trying to find a comparison to prove a point on another forum and came across this thread: http://honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2868941. So much stupidity in one thread, I can hardly control myself. Specifically, post #13 reads:

I have 8k HID's and i loved them with the Stock Headlamp buckets but i put on a set of after market Euro's and ther crap now.
If you have After market headlamp buckets i suget OEM with HID's as thay aim the light better.

i can see alot with them as 8k is the highest amount of reflecting light out of the light spectrum for HID's

now NOT all H4 bulbs are High/Low's but all of them i have seen that are High/Low all use a Crappy 55W Halogen bulb for the High beam. it nice to have if you reach up and try to flip to High beam you don't lose you headlights.

now this is a little off the topic but my buddy has a chevy with the 4 Headlight set up and he runs 35W 8K's in the low beam buckets and 55W 10K's in the high beam.
now when he flips from low to high there is a BIG diffirance the 10K's look the same as the 8K's in color but are ALOT brighter.

My guess would be him just assuming since your brain can be easily tricked and the blue light makes it seem brighter. Sorry I don't know the actual science to it.
Probably never even tried to get actual facts before posting that.
