Just got a big surprise about DVD

Went to CCity...got to the point of buying an in-dash DVD player. Then, out of curiousity the sales guy asked what I was going to do with it. So, I said let the kids watch movies while we go down the road. Well, he states that you can't use the in-dash DVD players while driving down the road.

What good is one of these if they are useless while driving?

Is this just in South carolina that we can't do that? Anyone know?

I'm pretty sure it's illegal everywhere. However...several of the in-dash units can be bypassed to allow for DVD playback while driving.

I have a Pioneer AVIC-D3 that I bypassed. It's a great unit for the price.

Yea, your not suppose to be able but I just had a friend wire it in . If they do it at the shop they will most likely make it so that your parking break has to be engaged for it to play DVD's. I think alls that we did was didn't wire the ground but i'm not sure. I can find out more if you'd like.

I work at a CC in CA and since I've worked here theres been a law that says that no mobile video used for entertainment can be viewed by the driver while the vehicle is in motion, all our in dash installs must be connected through the parking brake to ensure that the vehicle is not going to move while a dvd is playing. However most indash units are bypassable, they all differ in the ways to actually bypass it though... ...if you get pulled over here in CA I heard that the fine get pretty hefty depending on the situation.

My friend's DVD (don't remember what brand) has a warning screen when you turn it on, stating that is should not be used while the vehicle is in motion.... of course it's been bypassed.....

If you get it installed from a installer. Your basically 95% of the time not going to be able to view it while you are driving. If you install it yourself or get one of your friends to do it, they bypass it!!

Go Bypass way. Try the install yourself if you would like.

Like the other guy said...it applies to the driver only. It is as simple as a green ground wire that they run to the ebrake. Screw it down else where and it will work anytime. I have a screen in my car which I play music videos on.

Ditto to everything

I have a jvc and clipped into the ground on the e-brake. Now I can watch dvds' while in motion and program the navigation system for a destination while driving as well which you are also not supposed to be able to do! And yeah, all of that is illegal everywhere

It depends on the headunit. My Jensen VM9410 just needed the brake wire grounded. My Alpine IVA-W200 required a Pac bypass box.

Newer units now need the signal to alternate, the older in dash decks were just ground, the jensen units that just came out (for sure the 9412...) and phase linear havent come up with bypasses....yet

Yeah the newer ones have to have a pulse signal sent to them. It took me a while to figure out how to bypass my Jensen for this, there is a code. There are always ways around it.

My hounding question is what is the difference between a DVD playing, and the animations on the screen (AKA animated screen savers) while the music is playing? I can download a few screen savers for my HU and load them onto the HU.

I would see, maybe a good part in the movie... but I really don't look at my screen while I am driving.

That's a weak argument at best, as common sense says you're more likely to pay closer attention to a video then a 6 second looping animation of race cars or dolphins or what have you. Besides, if this is just for your kids anyway, most 06 and up headunits allow playback through seperate monitors like an overhead or headrest installed units even while the vehicle is in motion. The feature is called dual zone, and Alpine's IVA-W205 as well as that new double din 7" model from Sony have it. Of course you can bypass these with PAC modules, but if you do and find yourself in an accident down the road, god help you because the first thing a cop does these days if he notices a dvd unit in a car is check to see if it will operate without the parking brake set. Besides getting a hefty fine, you might also be found at fault for the accident (whether it was yours or not) and chances are your insurance company isn't going to want anything to do with you after they get a copy of the police report.

So just how much is the luxury of watching season 2 of Desperate Housewives during your commute worth to you anyway?

Sorry folks it's bad enough on the road with people on the phone, but if they're watching a movie, video they're not watching the road. They players should only be seen from the back seat. Yeah I'm probably gonna get slammed over this but what the heck. Oh I have never used the phone going down the road, I'll pull over if it rings and if they hang up before I ans. I have caller ID.

Guy in a city nearby plowed into some kids crossing the street while watching a movie on an in dash DVD player he had 'hacked' to work while driving . He is being charged as 100% at fault even though the kids ran across the street. Don't be a douche. Get the DVD player installed in the rear.
