Angry 2011 F-150 HDE gave an unfortunate surprise

WTF? I am so livid. When did they start putting GOVERNORS on new vehicles? You may be saying to yourself where in the hec has this guy been, but I keep my vehicles for a long time, so I had no clue that vehicles were governed. Back in 1987 I bought a Grand National and I kept it for 14 years. Had it up to 126mph and it never stopped accelerating. Then in 2001 I bought a 2000 Ford F-150 Harley Davidson Edition and had that up to 118mph - again, no governor (or at least I hadn't reached its limit). And now I have the 2011 F-150 Harley Davidson Edition and it barely maxes at 102mph? WHAT? Damn speedometer goes to 120 for ****s sake. WHY? And WHY so low?

Are the governors set to the tire rating? Well, if that's true, high performance Pirelli tires come stock on the truck - someone's gonna tell me they are limited at 100mph? I'm sorry, but this is just not kosher with me.

Can the computer be reprogrammed to either cut the damn thing off completely, or raise the max speed? I mean, what if I get super duper high performance racing this/that/blah tires that are rated at 150mph? Then what?

Furious ...

Then you are still likely to kill yourself or someone else.

Oh come on, seriously, I feel like a child whose parents put a curfew on me - or in this case, my truck. Who regualtes that anyway? The nerve of Ford to put a limit on a vehicle without it being an option or something. I did not give them over $50K to dictate what I can and cannot do with my vehicle.

Anyway, doesn't matter. It's obviously there (for whatever reason I have yet to learn), - what matters is how do I modify it?

It keeps Ford from being sued. I think it can be programed out.

Just funning with ya a bit. But you gotta remember, it's a truck and will handle like one.

Be careful.

X2, the limiters are kinda silly but if it keeps the average dumbarse kid from plowing into me doing 200, I'll just go around it.

They have been limited to about 95 since at least 2004. Takes a tune to reset it.

I'm not looking for some way to modify this truck into a racing vehicle, or some sort of hot rod - I just do not want to be limited! OR, if I have to be limited, WHY so LOW? I mean, at least limit it to over what the speedometer dial shows - like 125 or 130.

There's no way any modification can be entered into the computer to set the limiter to a higher speed? Or can it be accessed and changed via MyKey? I'm still just in such disbelief.

I heard they set the limiter speed based on the tire rating - is that true? I also heard they set it based on the transmission, or gears? Crap, we have SIX gears in that truck - six. I should not be hitting a wall at 100mph ... it's ridiculous.

I despise the lack of control...

An old trick to bypass the govenor was turning the flashers on, no idea if that works on the new trucks or not

^^^ Hold that thought. You realize that yer foot is NOT directly connected to the throttle plate, right? The PCM is gonna do what it damn well pleases with yer requests for torque - including limiting same for any number of reasons.

Just Pray the PCM isn't female (or programmed by one)

And yes - tire capability is a KEY reason for the limiter.

The speed rating on the stock Pirelli performance tires is "V" or 149mph.

Doesn't make sense.

I agree, bud. I saw that myself. Gotta be Guv'mint, or Corporate PC kicking in ... what's another 30 mph after hitting 102?

Sadly, a programmer is the only way to get the limiter either rasied, or removed.

Good luck.

oh, and btw - if the PCM is going to do as it damn well pleases, well then, it is a female.

... or a cat.
