I'm curious about this since I'm an hour from the Mississippi line and 2 hrs.
from Tennessee and was wondering if anybody has done it and how it worked out.

 

For what purpose? There should be a reason to , right?

Purchasing an older model down south, -free from the rust belt is the only reason I can think of. Is there another ?

 

I've heard people doing it because of taxes.

 

We bought a 03 Monte Carlo SS Pace Car Edition for my wife with 34k on it and she drove it for two years with no problem. We bought it off E-Bay from a dealer in New Jersey and I flew out and drove it home.

 

In most states, you pay the taxes of the state you title in. An example is if I buy in Pa. they would not collect Pa. sales taxes. But I would have to come up with the cash for Md sales tax. What really would be bad is if you had to pay in both.

 

I did that with my 05 when I bought it. Dealer went to Carrolton, GA to pick it up for me. The biggest pain was I had to take the truck to the DMV to register so they could check the VIN in person.

 

I bought mine in Salina Kansas, about 520 miles away. Great price, several thousand less than locally. We just wanted an excuse for a road trip, but I paid 6.25% state tax only when registering here in Illinois versus the local tax which is almost 10%. Extra bit of savings too.

 

In Texas, you pay 6.25% when buying a vehicle. No local tax. If you buy out of state, you have to register the vehicle in Texas which is going to cost you 6.25%. So, no tax savings.

 

I think in most cases the state you live in will try to hit you for the sales tax if you bring in a vehicle you just purchased out of sate. Maybe there are some loopholes or exceptions, but my understanding it there is 1 year window.

IOTW, if you try and register it in your state within 12 months of the purchase, they will attempt to collect the sales tax.

 

Here in MO, dealers do not collect sales tax on any purchase or handle any kind of registration. They give you a 1 month cardboard plate and you have to take the paperwork to the DMV yourself and pay the sales tax. Kinda makes you wonder what the dealer doc fee is for.

 

My youngest girl bought her BMW X5 from the plant at Spartanburg, S Carolina. Then she brought it home to pay the Texas taxes on it and now lives in Charleston- go figure. She claims she saved a ton of money on it. I hope so cause that beast drinks gas pretty bad.

 

That's mine. Even after a couple of winters my f150 from North Carolina is already starting to look bad underneath, but the ones here are worse.

 

The only way to get out of sales tax is if the private party seller is nice and give a bill of sale for less then the actual sale price. I've done that.

 

On mine from Kansas there was no tax collected, only 6.25% state tax here in Illinois. Had I bought it here in my hometown it would have been 9.75%

Hi guys...been a while!

I just bought a new Escape from a dealer in Idaho...I'm living in Washington...I didn't pay Idaho sales tax, I paid Washington state sales tax. The dealer collected it, it was all in the contract so I didn't have to pay anything else when I went to register it.
