Serious Subject: Do You Butter Your Bread?
So you're about to make a samwich, you pull the bread out, your favorite toppings, condiments etc...
Do you butter your bread first?
If not, why the heck not?
I'm old school and always butter my bread before making a samwhich, but some people I know (who I harshly judge and criticize by the way), they don't put anything on their bread, thus leaving their samwhich dry as a fart.
So do you use butter?
Margarine? "YUCK!"
or nothing at all?
Later we'll discuss using mayo or mustard, or both.
Myself I'm a fan of one at a time, depending on my mood.
Using both can lead to sensory overload and deter from the enjoyment of your favorite samwhich.
Some of my favorite vegi toppings on samwhiches include:
~ Sliced up radishes (very thin)
~ Fresh hot pepper rings (the more the better) Hungarian ones are the best
~ Various types of lettuce
~ Cherry tomato cut in half
~ Chopped up green onions
If you have a favorite topping, please share it and explain why you like it.
Habs
PS---> It's 1am, gimmee a break, the place needs a little action.

Make some toast, put butter on it, then add grape jelly. (do not add peanut butter, do not pass go)
I haven't had this since I was a kid (which was back around the 16th century), but I remember it tasting awesome!
Toast with butter (real BUTTER) none of the other stuff, is awesome.
Butter on bread in addition to anything else . . . not so much (with the exception of grape jelly mentioned above).
Butter on bread when making grilled cheese sandwiches = yes (especially grilled ham and cheese)
Butter on bread with nothing else (especially fresh bread or baguettes or toast) = yes.
Butter on a deli sandwich . . . no.
(By the way, just thinking of grilled cheese, in the midwest they'll deep fry anything. I'll bet they deep fry grilled cheese - or any sandwich of that matter).

my mom's side of the family does the butter thing.
my dad's side doesn't.
growing up, our sandwiches were typically lunch meat + mayo and/or mustard. thats how I still do it.
i don't like tomatos, so those never go on anything I order. If i get a blt, i hold the t.
otherwise, lettuce, onion, etc is all good.

I use only real butter and yes I've been known to use butter when making sandwiches. I use it mainly when making a sandwich with a moist filling, like tuna, the butter helps keep the filling from soaking through the bread and making a mess. I find that the filling usually has enough flavor that you barely notice the butter. I usually do not put it on PBJ's nor do I use it on sandwiches with deli meats and cheeses. On toast it's a must. And it would be difficult to make grilled sandwiches without it!

Yes, poor Buck is getting a little long in the tooth in his old age and packing on a few extra pounds.
I don't like to say anything because it's so unlike me to point out his shortcomings.
I sort of 'almost' feel sorry for him, but not quite.
Oh look, I just so happen to have that link handy of Bucky's picture, take a good look, its a face only a mother could love:

Habs,
I have to disagree with the butter on most sandwiches. My dad used to do that and I just can't do that one.
You have to use real butter...all those spreads have trans-fats and will kill you plus they taste like Crisco.
Butter on toast with jelly is great!
Butter on grilled cheese is a must too!
Butter on a deli sandwich...got to pass!
If you want a really bad sandwich, my father in law likes peanut butter and salt sandwiches. I can't even imagine how vile that has to be!!! Argh!

Wasn't there a "calling all fat bastards" thread at one time? I wonder if buttered bread has anything to do with it?
There isn't any butter in our house. I used to like butter but have since gotten over it.
I bring a sandwich for lunch every work day. It's pretty much the same thing every day. It's going to be on whole wheat or whole grain bread. Mustard, because it's got decent ingredients. Lettuce, because it's good for us (I have a salad every day too). Cheese, because though it's high in fat, I like it. I can afford a little fat. Then I usually have turkey, because of factory farmed meat, it's the least bad. This week I splurged and got ham, just to shake things up.
Nope, I don't use butter on my bread, or anything else for that matter. That probably contributes to why at age 38 and 5'10" I'm still 155-160lbs.
If it weren't for my wife, I may well have become a regular contributer to the "calling all fat bastards thread".

Nothing better than a few slices of rare roast beef, a slice or two of swiss cheese, and real butter on both pieces of bread. Yummm, a great sandwich.
Grilled cheese, cheese on the inside, butter on the outside, medium heat until butter gives it that crispy toasted look. I like mine pressed down flat as they cook. (Sometimes even a thin slice of ham in there with the cheese.)
Butter and jelly sandwich, no peanut butter for a change.
An Italian sandwich is one of the few I will skip the butter.
Stuff it with:
Provolone, roast beef, copicola, turkey, lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, black olives, salt, pepper and enough oil and vinegar so the sandwich slides out of your hands every time you pick it up.
