well after 10 years on the internet, i finally got hit with a virus! it was the "think point" virus that was mentioned on here before.
so what is a good program to get? either free or atleast less that 50 bucks to protect my laptop?
i just downloaded malwarebytes anti-malware program for a temporary fix.

I use Kaspersky, too.
I like it, and my computer guy also says it uses less resources than some of the other programs (I'll take his word for it).
I think it was $90 for 3 years, covering 3 computers? Can't remember. But it does have a 30 day free trial.

do you have the internet security or the anti virus.
i may be willing to spend the money if it is very good and updatable. i just had the worst feeling when i seen the think point and i dont want it happening again!

If the computer is still infected, start the unit and let it load. Push cont, Alt, and Delete to get the task manager up. Under the processes tab, find hotfix.exe. Click on it once to highlight it, now disable it at the bottom of the task manager. You now have a screen with no icons. In the task manager at the upper left click on file and then click on run. In the space provided type explorer.exe You'll now have a desktop full of icons and have basically shut the ThinkPoint down temporarily. Now you can run your malware program to get rid of it.
I'm using AVG 2011. It's a freeby and it does a good job but it sometimes is a resource pig. Updates are almost painful and this particular unit is a dual core so if you have a single processor, it may be even longer than mine. Scans are fairly quick though and it also comes with an anti-root lit scanner but you need to know that most programs like a firewall uses rootkits to work so you may find some that do not need to be removed. Good news, if you do remove them and they are needed, an update to the program will reinstall them. I'm also using Comodo Firewall and love it. It finds more than the AVG BEFORE it ever gets on the hard drive. I also keep Malwarebytes updated on the desktop just in case. Another offering from AVG is their Tune up. It's a one time use freeby that costs you if you want to keep it. I think it's worth the bucks for most users.

I have the internet security, which comes with the anti virus. Had it for six months or so. All good so far.
We had AVG (free) on the home machine six months or so ago, but my wife clicked on some fake security warning link (I think she was checking out Dancing with the Stars results, lol) and we got some nasty Trojan that messed up our computer, but good!
All of the things you would normally do (including cntrl alt del) would not work. It blocked google (would take you to places you were not googling), among other things. I could run AVG from Safe Mode, but it would not fix the problems.
Anyways, I had to re-format the computer to get it to run right. It sucked, but we had recently backed everything up so not much was lost except time.

I just did a virus repair with that thinkpoint on it. Malwarebytes will get rid of it BUT when you download malwarebytes besure to click the update tab and update it to current and then run the quick scan. If its not updated it will not help you. After malwarebytes gets rid of it then download AVG 2011 Free or Avast Free and then run a scan using it. Problem will be fixed.
Many internet service providers supply free virus protection just gotta download it. Comcast, My ISP provides Norton. In the past on my old machines I hated norton but on this machine its working well. They use to provide Mcafe I also didnt have any disdain for that.
Did you update the malwarebytes to todays version? If you did it will take it off, all you have to so is run the quick scan on malwarebytes.
