update before you scan. If it keeps freezing up go into safe mode with networking and see what it comes up with on malwarebytes

Some viruses will delete mbam.exe which is the executable for Malwarebytes. If that happens uninstall Malwarebytes and then reinstall but do not let it update or open. After the install is complete go to the install directory and rename mbam.exe to explorer.exe. Then launch explorer.exe. Malwarebytes will launch, run the update and then run a quick scan.

Yeah, after you install it update it to get the latest virus definitions. As for a good free program, Microsoft Security Essentials is a pretty good program. I have that on all of my work machines that don't have our main AV program on.

That's what I was going to say, contact your ISP and see what's up.

Try Vipre from Sunbelt Software - $39 for a site license. I switched my office to Vipre last year and my assistant has yet to infect a computer from surfing facebook. That is a testament beyond compare.
Vipre has a very light footprint - I even run it on Netbooks we use on location.

That is a rock solid place to start your removal. You may need to run it in safe mode to remove some PITA infections...

Security Essentials is a pretty good program, Avast does not use a lot of computer resources, meaning you can scan and update while doing other things on the puter. AVG 2011 is a very good program but it will slow down your puter when it is updating or scanning. Just go to download.com and get Avast and you wont have to worry bout it
