Well OG, I think you are blaming the wrong folks here. The electric shock devices should never be used on any rodeo animals. I've ridden in lots of local rodeos and never would anything like this be acceptable. It's the guy who supplies the animals that needs to be held down and given several doses of the hand held devices. Those are his men handling those animals, not just some cowboy that wondered in off of the street. And yes it's true, the shock doesn't injure the animal. But the animal may injure itself from the shock. Either way, far from the sporting nature of a rodeo.
The elk calf part of the vid is evidence against an idiot that has no regard for the animals he is suppose to protect. He'd make one fine politician. Goods news here is that there is a vid to show in court for his prosecution. I work cattle a couple of times a year for neighbors and I can assure you any that need to be dispatched are done humanely and quick. Leaving any animal to die for hours is not acceptable. The good doctor should have tested the animals before giving them the death sentence. But that would have been the right thing to do which he obviously has no clue about.

(see Genesis 1:28-30) In my world view, there is a clear distinction between the value of human life and the value of animal life.
these people were afraid of TB outbreaks. I'm not sure on the time table for the testing, but i'm sure it was just faster and more efficient to kill the animals rather than take blood tests and wait for results while risking the lives of humans in the process.
The other problem is this sounds like a situation where the people executing the animals either were inexperience or limited in terms of the tools available to them. Maybe it was a police officer with only a handgun available to them.
with regards to the baby, vets have been known to take baby farm animals and throw them against the ground to break their necks if a deformity or something is suspected. this is the way things go. Perhaps he could have given the baby a bullet to the head, I don't know the circumstances.

They should've tested before slaughtering, and they should've killed in a better way. That said, I've been hunting and have ripped the head off dove...whatever. It's still just food...as our cultural dictates.
In asia, dogs are food. In my house, my dogs are family. *shrug* Societal and arbitrary constructs. Different people value different life differently.
