Train horns????

So as not to disrupt a tech discussion post, & rudely hijack someones thread I'm gonna post this here. What is everybodys obsession with putting train horns on their trucks? Are they even legal for street use?

I see threads of were guys are laughing about scaring the hell out of other drivers or people with these horns. I mean how rude & inconsiderate are some people? These horn are loud enough that they could cause an accident to an unsuspecting driver.

Plus I have seen the prices of some of the kits! Why pay that much for a freaking horn?

I know one thing for sure if I ever run across anybody blowing one of those horns at me at a stop light, I would sure get out of my vehicle & stomp a mud hole in the drivers ***, especially if I was on my bike.

OK, putting on my flame suit for the firestorm that will likely be heading my way.

I did not see anything funny in my post, it is a serious question.

What does thread fail mean?

Theyre good when a regular ole horn just dont work. I wish i had one. no one does anything when you honk the stocker. someone cuts me off and i lay on the horn and they just wave..with a train horn...ive seen first hand, they move out of the way real quick.

its not legal, but for short blasts no cop is gonna mess with ya. some exhausts arnt legal but people put them on, HIDs in halogen casings, lifted higher than the law, tails tinted too dark, layin frame and shootin sparks...theres a lot of illegal things out there, you just have to be careful when doing it.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I love my Nathan horns. I had some car last night tailgating me and I blew the horns and he backed off

Train horns are just like anything... in the hands of a responsible adult they can and do serve a purpose. In the hands of a machismo d-bag they can range from simply annoying to dangerous.

What frightens me about them is that train horns are so distinctive to trains that people assume a train is coming when they hear one... which in many cases causes people to react without thinking when faced with a horn in an unlikely area. Additionally, if enough of the machismos start getting train horns and blasting them every time they think they've been wronged in traffic, the horn loses some of the impact it's designed to have for its real purpose... getting people out of the way of a damn train.

Personally I don't use my horn enough to justify something like that anyway because I tend to let stupid drivers be stupid... it's not like honking at them is going to change their behavior after I drive away. I really don't want to be shot when somebody decides to take their bad day out on me. If I honk, it's to notify someone that they're not paying enough attention.

So if train horns are so dangerous to drivers, should we take them off tractor trailers? fire trucks? ambulances? dump trucks? All of these vehicles use them on regular freeways and roads, so why can't passenger cars use them?

Because passenger cars are driven by people who took a simple driver's test and don't have any special training? Because passenger cars aren't 40 tons, responding to emergencies, or rushing people to the hospital?

Besides, I've never heard a tractor trailer, ambulance, or fire truck with a train horn... all of those vehicles have a specifically different sound that is recognizable by most motorists. Can a passenger vehicle legally and morally equip themselves with an ambulance warbler or fire engine horn and expect to not draw criticism?

Just making a counter point.

Someone honking their train horn at you would not permit lethal force under the rule of law. You would go straight to jail. Have fun with that tough guy.

Thank you guys ^^^^^ for your replies, they were very helpful. Real mature.

So it is just a matter "attention whoring" is why people use them, even though they know they are illegal? The stock horn is loud enough to get someone's attention IMO, & the laws too, otherwise they would make them louder off the assembly line.

Thanks to you who posted a honest helpful reply.

most everyone i know that has them rarely uses them and theyre just for show. blown off at a show or something like that or messing around in the middle of nowhere.

kits are expensive yes but its how a person wants to spend their money. if you or anyone opposed to them can give me an actual situation where they were personally or have read an article that can be posted about train horns on a truck causing an accident or something like that. id be intereseted in seeing it.

fact is why make such a fuss about something that rarely happens. theres a dbag in cs that has a siren and likes to make it welp every now and then when driving. just makes me look up and say "what a dbag" then i go on my way. does it mean that no one should ever put a siren on a passenger vehicle even if they dont use it for illegal purposes????
