What the heck is going on? Greener and Habibi both agree on something

As an owner of 6 dogs (small ankle biters) I agree with you 100% Greener, people are inconsiderate and that's the problem.

When I take one of my little fellers for a walk (on a leash) I always carry a Baseball bat in my left hand.
Not because I like to beat people (which sometimes I wouldn't mind), but because of all the inconsiderate douches out there who let their dogs run loose.

My dogs weigh about 9 pounds each, and if I get some dumbass who let's their dog off-leash and it attacks me or my pet, that basebll bat is being called into action.
I would carry a gun if we were allowed to, but we are all a bunch of liberal pansies up here and that's not an option for us, so the Louisville Slugger is my only line of defence

I'm glad you made it out alive

It never fails when my wife goes running she seems to always come back with a story about some ding dong that didn't have his dog leashed and she got chased. I've convinced her it that it is totally OK to kick the doggy doo out of any dog that makes her feel threatened. She is seriously considering getting some pepper spray or one of those high pitched whistles that dogs supposedly hate.

I keep telling her to take the .357 but she says it will throw off her stride...

Maybe its you? To get attacked twice by two seperate dogs that the owners claimed they have never had a problem is a little strange...

There's another thread in GD that tells the story of some girl who is controlling her dog really well.

So it's not everyone.

One of the regulars at my Friday night poker game is a greasy used car salesman named Greg. He is the typical shady salesman that everyone hates, lies, cheats steals, would pull his mom's teeth out to make a sale. (we always cut the deck twice when he is dealing)

My dog Ozzie sits under the table and just stares at him the entire time, and when Greg gets up for a coffee, Ozzie always nips at his ankles.

It's like they can sense the badness in people.

Maybe Greener has something he's not telling us.
Confess you sins Greener, it's never too late, we won't judge you (too harshly)

My reply when people ask me if my dog will bite..."I don't know, I never asked her" Because in truth, even the kindest, gentlest dog has the potential to bite. There are many reasons, they feel threatened, they're frightened or they're just plain mean but never...NEVER...take someones word that their dog will not bite!! I do agree that people who can't or won't control their dogs is a growing problem. When we lived in town I used to carry pepper spray with me when I walked because there are always so many dogs that are unleashed and unfenced. Out here in the sticks, we just shoot troublesome dogs that come on the place and quietly bury the body out back...shoot, shovel and shut up...

This IS a shining moment...Hab and I actually agree on something! My prayers have been answered!

WLB, I have to call BS on my friends saying that 'oh, my dogs never done this before.' Yea right. When your dog is standing on its hind legs, snarling and growling before I even get through the front door, Im hardly going to believe that 'this is the first time he's ever done that'

If I'm ever attacked by my neighbors dog in my yard, and worse, if it poses a threat to my family, I will gladly walk inside, get my 12 gauge, and take care of the problem and smile while doing it. Im willing to go to court and pay a fine if it means that everyone is safe.

I had a 100+ pound Redbone Coonhound for over 13 years. In that time he acted aggressively towards one human being that I am aware of. He loved the UPS guy, because he associated packages with good stuff like a new bed or pig ears. He liked policemen and people of any race or color. He played with the neighbors' kids and would fight with other male dogs and he chased cats. He ignored joggers, runners, bicycles and motorcycles. No one in the neighborhood had any reservations about Tyson, everyone knew he was friendly, but not everyone liked him. He pooped on some peoples’ yards and got the neighbor’s lab pregnant.

The one time that I saw him get aggressive with another human being was at Harpers Ferry, along the towpath. A Latino Park Policeman stopped my wife and I for walking the dog off of the leash. My wife is also Latino. I had the dog on a leash well before the policeman approached. The policeman was very aggressive and rude. Both of us were surprised, we had never seen Tyson react this way. The policeman threatened to shoot Tyson and drew his service gun while I had Tyson on the leash. I had my wife take Tyson away, quickly, while I approached the policeman standing directly in front of him between him and my retreating wife and dog.

I asked him what the hell was the problem? He holstered his gun and coldly wrote me a ticket for dog off of leash. He was more than an ahole, I believe that he may have been a rapist. He certainly should not have been a cop and was an incident waiting to blow up. I took the case to court, to try and tell the judge exactly that. The judge refused to even hear the case. I would have to re-file and ask for a new hearing at which point I just paid the fine.

Man that sucks. You just never know what an animal is going to do.

I love dogs, and look forward to getting one as soon as I have room for it to run and not cage/tie it up all the time. I guess I've just run across a couple that are over protective or who have perhaps been abused some and act aggressively towards all strangers.

I will not get another dog until I move out of weenie land. Dogs that are never allowed to be dogs, run free, chase rabbits, pee on everytrhing, etc. etc. get neurotic and unpredictable. We are doing the same thing to our young male children, forcing them to act like little girls and not little boys. And then we wonder why they are so screwed up, can't concentrate, won't learn, hate school, and act aggressively or get depressed or abuse drugs.

Who is "we"?

That could possibly be the strangest thing I've read here.

Whether you agree with a leash law or not, you need to obey it. If you want to allow your dog to run free, you need to move someplace where that's allowed. Most cities do not allow that. I like dogs, but I do not like them loose in my yard. I live in the city limits by choice, and that's one reason. Animal Control is on my speed dial.

I think it's great to be able to allow your dogs to run loose, but do it in a place which allows it.
Many cities have dog parks etc and designated spots just for this.
Letting your dog roam off-leash in public areas which aren't designated makes you an irresponsible ahole who is doing a disservice to your pet.

Think about this...

You might mean well, you might think your beloved pet is so well behaved, he won't bother anyone, but the truth is a dog is still an animal and needs to be controlled at all times when in public places.

All it takes is for your dog to see a squirrel or whatever, they have natural instincts to chase, and the dog could be chasing the squirrel, run right into the street, and then "boom", it's all over but the crying.

All of this would've been prevented if you just put your damn dog on a leash and didn't take liberties that are not yours to take.
