Had this link forwarded to me by a friend.

I think it is a problem if you buy tires from a mom and pop outfit that keeps their tires out in the sun and rain during business hours for advertisement. The man that lost his son purchased them from one of these outfits.

Every driver should keep an eye on their tires. Usually well before a tire gets so dry that it fails, the sidewall will being to show small cracks and/or the rubber on the sidewall will feel like it is drying out.

I got the same e-mail a couple days ago. Yes, it is a problem, but the media is trying to make it worse than it is. Blowouts are primarily caused by tires being run low. All of the examples they gave were of tires that were run low. As a matter of fact, the clips they showed were of the recalled firestones on the explorers from a few years ago. The problem there was Ford said to run them at 26psi and Firestone said it was too low thus causing a blowout. Also, the clips they showed of the blown out tires "all over the road" were from retreaded heavy duty tires off of semis. The passenger tires we buy are NOT retreads. (I spent way too many years in the auto industry.)

Where did you get your info? Even the news article in question states that there is currently no tire age law on the books.
The green diamond tire looks interesting. What I meant was all the tire dealers selling to the average consumer do not sell retreads. One would have to go to a specialty company like Green Diamond. And, on that note, retreads are from worn out tires that have been retreaded. The shell of the tire is still original. If there were a 5 year rule on tires, retreads wouldn't be feasible.
