From the mouth of babes...
So yesterday, I went to purchased a couple of new Glocks. My wife was doing something, so I took my daughter to the gun store with me. (Never thought about the consequences
Anywho, she is 3, and asked where we were going. I told her we were going to the Daddy toy store where they had guns. She inquired as to why I needed a gun. I told her that daddy liked to shoot. She asked what I shot. I have no clue if she even knows what shooting is, but I told her targets...and you guessed it, she asked what targets were. I explained that targets are paper with crayon coloring. My thought process was to explain it in a way that she would comprehend. On a side note: I am thinking she is a little young to tell her that I have the gun for crackheads, rapists, thieves and general lowlifes. LOL.
We get to the shop, and I pick two Glocks, the G30 and G22, and then proceed to make the purchases. I cracked a stupid joke about one being for me, and the other for my daughter. The sales guy did not find it funny, handed me a youth safety pamphlet, and said that he was going to pretend he did not hear that comment. I was joking, but maybe there is some law about three year olds and firearms...I dunno. (I am being sarcastic, some people tend to take this stuff literally) So, we get home, daddy fondles his Glocks, and the daughter watched Tom and Jerry.
Later that evening, my wife and daughter leave the house to run an errand. My daughter asks where they were going. My wife says to "Target". My daughter says that daddy shoots them and wonders why did I not come with them. My wife laughed. Then a few seconds later, my daughter tells my wife that daddy bought her a gun...uh oh forgot to tell mommy what daddy did earlier that day, but thats another story. Mommy gets a little freaked out. I get the call...and mommy wants to know what would happen if our daughter had said this in public. The wife and I are cool, she's not gonna alter any future weapon purchases due to this incident, but I was just wondered. Is taking her to the gun store that big of a deal? Is her comment that big of a deal? If she said that daddy had bought her a gun in a school...would there be those who considered it to be akin to saying she had a gun? I guess I really need to watch what I say.

20 years ago I wouldn't have worried about it. Today, who knows... there are probably people who are stupid enough to believe you wanted to buy your three year old a pistol.
There might be State laws somewhere that prohibit minors from being in gun stores, sort of like how anyone under 21 can't be in an ABC (liquor) store, I don't know though.

I think your joke was funny man, but like NSCU says, people are stupid and too panicky.
You should not have to worry.
OTOH, anyone who works around kids (teachers, nurses, etc...) is basically trained to report any possibility of child abuse and endangerment first, and let the authorities sort it out later.
If your daughter said it around the right busy body with no sense of humor, they might report it, and let the cops or Child Protective Services decide whether or not to follow up.

I don't know about all state laws, don't recall if there is a minimum age for entering the store, then again we always went into the liquor stores as a kid, they had cheap pop, cold.

it is a law in texas. technically that seller could get into trouble if he knowingly sold you a hand gun that you planned to give to someone under 18. im sure he knew you were joking, but they still have to cover their asses.
Why the wait? I bought the G22 in a .40 because...well, because. And I also like the fact that I can drop a .357 sig barrel in it and shoot away.
