Trust me, they do. I've worked in retail before and my experience was that any purchased items you had with you in the store had to have a receipt or other acceptable proof of purchase attached to them at all times. Also, your receipts were always checked against your items before anything went out the door.

I like going to the big box book stores. Sometimes I flip through a book and find the security tag, thin with the peal and stick back, take the paper off the back and lay on the floor it sticks to the bottem of an unsuspecting persons shoe, when they step on it.

As for shop lifting and security checks on receipts, I resent it, but it is a necessary evil.

3 seconds to show a reciept, longer then 3 seconds to deal with the BS, or walk out the door acting like a ****.

Maybe some of you are too busy, but I have 3 seconds to spare. And I've never been asked unless I have an unbagged item.

Do you let them touch the receipt? Do you let them cut it or write on it?

It's your receipt, is it important enough for them to give you a discount on your next purchase to see the receipt? A reward for being honest and cooperative. After all, they are passively calling you a potential thief by checking your receipt.

3 seconds here, 3 seconds there, where does it all end? The honest people of the world pay for the sins of the 1% that are dishonest.

Have fun trying to put items back in your cart in the self-checkout without bagging them - the machine won't let you unless you set them on the weight-sensitive pad under the bag rack after scanning each one.

I am also from Georgia.

However, they can call the police, take a tag number and description and so on.

They cannot touch you, and there has been a topic maybe here or another forum in which wal-mart has passed a memo down that if a person decides to keep going do not try to stop them.

You can Google this or you tube it.

To answer you're question, yes, you could keep going, and there isn't anything they can do except call the police. As a matter of fact, even if you were stealing, their security has no lawful power to detain you, as again, they have no policing powers (most security agencies don't) and cannot hold you, or touch you if you decide to keep going.

Heres a police detective talking about how they won't stop you and yet refuse to prosecute.

Used to work at Wal-Mart, our loss prevention team were all deputized and acted as their own attorneys in court. Regular employees were not even allowed to suggest that someone was shoplifting. Even if caught on camera, unless an actual prevention associate caught them as an eyewitness, there was nothing they could do. As a safety measure, they do not want regular employees trying to stop criminals. Also, I think it has some legality to it, like if the person isn't actually shoplifting, they could sue Wal-Mart for false accusation, slander and all sorts of stuff.
Should they be able to check my receipt? Hell no, wanna look in my bag? Get a warrant first. Actually, I will probably let them just look and I will go about my way, but I talk a big game, lol.

You can choose not to bag the item. It puts a red tag under the item on the computer saying "Item not bagged" but it doesn't put anything on the receipt. It's how you can do the self-checkout with large items.

Anyone who breathes so much into a simple reciept check must have to much time on their hands or a mental retardation.

I think it really boils down to, I don't want too, and I don't have too. But, it's not always three seconds. Sometimes I am holding my daughter and pushing a cart and I stuffed the receipt somewhere. They ask for it and I have to put my daughter down, she starts crying and I am frantically looking for my receipt so I can pick her back up and it becomes a bunch of bullsheet.

I just want to buy my crap, and go on about my business, seriously, suck it.

2 very easy ways to take care of that -

1. Get into the habit of having your receipt plainly visible when you leave the store.

-OR-

2. Don't shop at stores that check receipts at the door.
