Its going to need your social to check your score. That is what your credit is attached to, not your name.

Whatever site you're on, make sure it's a "secure" one. You can look for the "padlock" symbol in Firefox and IE. Also the address field turns green in IE and finally, the address will start with "https", and not just "http". AnnualCreditReport.com is such a site.

And yes, you're going to HAVE to submit your SSN, at any legitimate site.

It worked for me. Had some credit problems at one time after a divorce and the site helped me fix those as well.

But yea, watch for the lock like Jack said.

Don't confuse a Credit Monitoring Service (what the youtube commercial was about) with the Government mandated, annual free credit report you are entitled to by law. You do not pay a dime for an annual report from one of the three credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax or TransUnion), if you access this report through a reputable site. But beware! There are many sites out there that try to make you pay a "processing fee" or something of that nature for this report. Others, that ARE legit DO try to talk you into a credit monitoring contract - just say "no".

And, getting your own annual free credit report has no effect on your credit score. But a credit report in conjunction with getting a mortgage or buying a car can.

annualcreditreport.com is what I have been using to get my free yearly report. Doesn't tell the beacon score, but will show a record of your credit.

Just as a followup on this.

Our newspaper, The Arizona Daily Star, had an article about the free credit report in the business section today. It said:
"Consumers can get a free credit report disclosure every year from each of the three national credit reporting companies. The authorized Web site for obtaining these free disclosures is: www.annualcreditreport.com "
In addition, there's no need to get the report from all three agencies at once. You can get it from one of them now, four months later get one from a different agency and four months later get one from the third. That way, you are staying pretty much up to date on the current status of your credit history.
