Wal-Mart...my $10 rant
As others have mentioned, she probably pocketed the $10. But you should still go back to the manager and ask if she was $10 over that night when she cashed in. It may not have been an accident at all - this might be a scam of hers. If you complain, management might start keeping an eye on her if they aren't already.
Matt, if you have a debit card that's what you should be using in these type transactions around town. Save the large cash transactions for your bank teller window.
I have a fairly high income yet rarely am I walking around with more than ten dollars in my pocket.
It took awhile to convince my two daughters who waitressed through college to get away from the cash lifestyle. I know it's a hassle to make deposits but, in the long run it's better than a jar of cash in your dorm room sock drawer.
Plastic of some kind is accepted just about everywhere now and you have precise record of what came in and what went out to help you budget your finances.

You won't get any information stolen from you if you use a debit card at Walmart - just shield the keypad on the POS terminal with your other hand when entering your PIN if you are that concerned.
That is why I pay cash also. A bank manager I dated when debit cards were first becoming popular advised me against them. She also said to never have your checking account "linked" to your savings account.
I still prefer to pay with cash for most stuff. For big purchases I use the Visa. I don't like to use my debit card for anything. There are way too many guys out there stealing your information and I do not want to give them access to my bank accounts. With cash they have no information of yours to steal and with Visa they will not charge you for purchases you have not made.
I use a CC for anything > $10.
If it's <= $10 I use cash.
After I use the cash, I go back to my wife and ask for another $10.
It's been that way for over thirty years.
Hey guys, who is on the Twenty anyways?
For some reason Matt's post bothers me. The problem is that Matt was a p***y and LET himself get screwed over by a cashier at Wallyworld. All Matt had to do was call a manager over, have them count the drawer down and if there was an overage it would have showed up. Problem solved.
In the future Matt, nut up or shut up!

You said she would not let you count your money yourself because there is a line. That should have been your first tip off.
Her sticking the money in the register before it was agreed on how much money you had given here is a major red flag and points to her scamming you.
Once it gets into the drawer, there is no way to tell which bills were yours.
I'm sure she is trained to count the money out infront of the customer to the customer's satisfaction before placing it in the drawer. This protects the store, because that way, the customer can't claim he gave her $100 when he only gave her $80.
By handling your money the way she did, she is probably violating the training she was given. I absolutely would talk to the manager. If she is not already on their radar, she should be.

but back on topic, this is called short-changing. most people dont count their change so $1 here, a few there, by the end of the day it is like tips. ive seen it happen
So the man reaches into the freezer behind the counter, pulls out a bird and places it up on the scale between them.
"Six pounds." he calls out.
The lady frowns a bit and says, "I'm having a dinner party and I'd like a larger bird please."
The man tosses the bird back and fishes around in the freezer but, that's the only chicken he's got.
Finally, he pulls the bird back out tosses it on scale but, this time he's got his finger lingering on the scale.
"Eight pounds!" he calls out.
The lady looks at the bird and is hesitant.
"It still doesn't seem enough, well give me both of them."
I have had the exact opposite happen, and what I mean by that is I gave change to a lady when I was waiting table that was right and she thought she gave me something else, it was quite a bit of money too. Something like twenty dollars. I didn't make much money that night. The reason that I know I was right, was becuase that was my only cash table that night.
As someone from both sides of the counter, took me about 2 minutes to completely count a drawer. Chances are, it was an accident (because you said she paused) Go back and ask them to check their accounting records for that register. Now if you see "markers" in a drawer and they do things like say you were $1 short, then you gotta theif. 10 "Oh, I'm sorry, you're a dollar short" is a $10 bonus.
FYI, Markers are rubber bands, sunflower seeds, paper clips, anything little in or around the register that reminds them how much money to palm before they leave. (2 bands, 3 clips and 2 pennies set aside might mean $7 to take out)

That situation sucks man. Let us know if you hear anything back from WM.
Almost all of my purchases are done with a credit card. I earn frequent flyer miles (that's how the wife and I flew to Amsterdam earlier this year), and pay off my credit card several times a month. Usually I'll log on to my bank account, tally all my credit card purchases, log them in my budget, then transfer that amount from checking to the CC to pay it off.
They way I see, cash is only for those purchases that you don't want anyone to know about.

We'll stop when you stop buying coffee from certain Seattle shops

Why bitch about it when you could of had the situation remedy immediately unless you yourself were second guessing and unsure?
Next time, order the cashier to have a manager come balance the cash drawer immediately. If it is over, order the cashier be reprimanded immediately, as this person is a thief.
I do hope Wal-mart reimburse you something. But, if they do, it's them taking a hit assuming you aren't lying. As anyone could email them that story.
