Great point---if you take a look at Honda or Toyota, it is more like," This is our body design, this is what we offer...Not too many different cars, etc. They have minimuized the styls and maximized profits. They really have not gone after "niche" customers, but the masses.

Consider how many Accords or Camrys are onthe road today---and how few body styles there actually are of each. Honda and Toyota, like it or not know their markets very well, know what they do, and do it well.

wouldnt you want to increase your target consumer? - by getting at another part of the market (retro car guys in my example) they can get at something other companies are missing i.e. getting more sales.

the answer is not necessarily cutting everything (Ford should cut some things cause the flex and the taurus x are absolutely POS if you ask me). Ford needs to drive sales, not cut costs - the foreign car companies already have ford beat with low operating costs by default (low wages, etc.).

it would be a good idea to put an emphasis on quality rather than make the cheapest cars available.

Ok, I understand.
If I was the CEO of Ford I'd fire all the workers.
Then I'd only hire workers from my home country, Turdsmania.
If they build good cars I don't have to worry about my job.
If they build bad cars I still don't have to worry because they are built by a bunch of Turds.

Retro cars look great, but what % of the sales are they? Even Vipers, Corvettes, etc...are necessary, but the vast majority of people who walk through the doors of a dealership on a daily basis are looking for an everyday quality car. The Fusion is a great competitor against the Accord and Camry; Ford should tinker a little bit with the Focus to make it an equal competitor with the Civic or the Corolla. Maximize sales, maximize profits.

Trucks--well, Ford has that down; they know what they are doing. But the Japanese know more about what cars we want than we do, it seems.

Part of the problem is still the lingering image of Japanese quality being superior. It really pisses me off when someone says they will never buy a domestic car. It's time for people to pull their heads out of the sand and actually give the big 3 (well.. GM and Ford ) a chance again.

how can they give them a chance? up until a few years ago they only had a 3yr/36k warranty but that had to change when hyundi offered a 10yr/100k now there doing something where they pay you I dont know what it is but the ad got my attention. what happened to the f150 ads were they hung a truck by the bed bolt or of a mustang doing a badass burnout or promote that the fusion gets killer mpg. I watch a average amount of tv and its sad when i notice other companies and not ford.

Like I said - negative return on investment. It will cost them more to tool it up than they will make selling them at any kind of price people will be willing to pay for them. Look at what happened to the retro T-Bird. People refused to pay 38k for them.

If I were Ford CEO:

Kill Mercury maybe Lincoln... just produce a top of the line model under the Ford badge if people demand it.

Move all factories out of the U.S. or to 'right to work' states to avoid Unions.

Get the 6.2L into the mustang

Redo the Expedition to compete better with the Tahoe

Get the Ranger to compete with the 'Yota tacoma

That will never happen.

Rename Ranger to F-100. Make the ranger name a "package".

Drop the crown vics.

Don't kill the Mercury/Lincoln line, just put it all under the same roof as ford(what Dodge is doing)

Ford has a lot going for it right now, it just needs that little nudge. Trust from the public/Americans again on quality will help them rise and stay to the top.
