Need a memory on the drivers captain chair.
The overhead console should have been designed so those of us who do not have garage door openers (or garages for that matter)could use that space for something else.
An engine hour meter would be a nice feature.

Wow this thread was started a long time ago. I don't have really any big complaints with my truck. Just wish it had limited slip in it. That and the fact that I want it to get about 80MPG. Oh well, maybe if I pretend I own a chevy and try and push my truck I could hit that.

Okay - the seat belts & glove box could definitely be better. I have a clip on my belt to keep it off my neck & it works IF the seat belt stays low on my hips. As soon as it starts to ride up I'm getting strangled again!
One thing I'd like is a folding step stool so I can reach the oil dipstick better! I know some of you are tall & wouldn't need it but I do! my friends were hysterical watching me as I tried to pull the dipstick to check it - they said it looked like I was wrestling with something under the hood & they were waiting to see me get yanked in! Maybe I just need new friends on second thought! LOL!

Hmmm....
After just driving mine for 9 hours down 75 and I-10 today,I finally give in,the seats suck! Ouch!! Even with the lumbar cranked out,it felt like my butt was on a rock all day.
The only other thing I would change would be the OD button. Ford is the only
auto maker I've ever seen that has a switch light up when it's off,lol,,,98

Okay...my turn. I'm really pleased with my truck except for the spark plug location and the overhead console. I'd have installed NGKs a long time ago if I didn't have to break my arms in 4 places to install them. And Ford, what the hell is that sorry excuse for a garage door opener holder? (That sounds odd, but I guess that's really what it is). Look at a Tahoe or Yukon. They have three small buttons on the overhead console that will "memorize" the code to 3 garage door openers, gates, etc. They sure look, feel, and work a lot better that that LEGO setup you are making us use now!

BTW-
For those of y'all in a single cab, try setting the speakers to 3/4 front, 1/4 rear and use the "compression" button when playing CDs. It's still not as good as the Expy's sound, but it makes a big improvement moving the sound foward a little. I just know that in my Lightning the rear speakers were muffled by the seats. Just passing a hint along...

Hey, mattbert, those holes in the garage door opener console thingie are for little pins (they look like lego pieces and maybe they are!) that you insert to push on the button of your remote. That way you don't need to open the overhead console door to make your remote work.

Just PUSH on that door (don't open it), and the little pins inside will push the button on the remote and, viola!, the garage door opens up.

I almost threw the doggone pins out and all of a sudden (after opening the door a bunch of times to activate the remote) it hit me how it is supposed to work! (duh!)

mattbert,

To replace the headlight bulbs all you have to do is pull up on the tabs behind the lights and pull the whole assemble out from the front. I tried to do it the way you explained until I read the owner's manual (I almost never read those things!!)

If you want even more space in the center console area replace the one you have with an Expedition console! The area under the lid is smaller but the change area is easier to get to and you have a flat area for a phone, etc.

I can't believe I just now found this thread! LOL. OK, a bit of background. 2000 F-150 just purchased two weeks ago, has 20,000 miles on it. has the captains chairs, supercab, 5.4L, auto, and the single CD player with "premium sound". A few complaints about it (otherwise everything is great)
Everything is round (on the dash), looks great, but have you tried mounting a GPS or CB in there? Darn near impossible.
For such a HUGE center console they give you room to store 10 CD's... they should've instead seperated the console into a few compartments... but right now it's so big I've got my jumper cables, tow strap, tow hitch , 24 CD's (in pouch), maglite flashlite, etc. in there! Currently working on a semi-concealed pistol storage for that area (gotta keep myself safe don't ya know!)
The glove compartment is tiny (manuals... an extra cell phone battery, two pens and it's about full!)
The overhead console, great, except I can't figure out what all those holes are for in the garage door opener section! Plus I was hoping for the Expedition type overhead console which as I recall has three sections, not two...
The oil filter! My 98 F-150 had a remote oil filter and I LOVED that thing... true 10 minute oil changes in my driveway! Now it's just as hard to get to as in my sisters Pathfinder! Come on Ford, get your act together.
To change the drivers side headlight (I replaced mine with PIAAs) you must remove the cowl cover, then remove the air intake, then reposition the coolant reservoir just so you can get in there and remove it, and then your guaranteed to break at least one of the stupid little plastic brackets!
I've found it quite tricky (if not impossible) to remove interior body panels (door trim, etc.).
The stock foglights are dim, good thing I replaced them with PIAA's and the PIAA airdam .
The body bolts that hold on the radiator cowl (I think thats what its called... the plastic thing that covers the radiator and has the diagrams for the belts, etc.)... those things SUCK. The idea is simple, you unscrew the screw, then pop out the bolt... then when you put it back in, you just drop it in the hole then screw in the screw. Out of the 12 or so on there, one of them worked properly... the rest I had to snap out and replace with checker replacements. the screws would turn but not come out! That was frustrating!
The channel along the windshield to run wires through would be a great place to run lighting wiring in for switches and stuff... if you could get em in there! It's like an impenatrable fortress!

Now enough about the complaints, here are a few nice touches that I love and I'm glad they have...
The Center console is HUGE with the captains chairs
I'm glad they redesigned the back seats so they fold UP rather then DOWN now (much easier to store stuff in there)
I like how the most important dash piece to remove to mount switches in and so forth, is the easiest to remove (the piece surrounding the steering wheel)
I think the steering wheel is quite comfortable.
There is room to spare in the engine compartment ot mount relays and such
They added a GREAT grommet on the firewall that I will easily be able to run a dozen or more wires through... much better then there older designs which you were lucky if you got a spare grommet at all, and if you did, it was big enough for about three wires to get through, which meant lots and lots of drilling and re-grommeting .
The interior light that stays on for 10 seconds or so when you unlock the doors, much better then fumbling around in the dark for the key hole!
The autolock feature no longer locks the doors if the door is open when the car is started! I can't tell you how many times I locked my keys in my car because I'd be installing lights or a CB or something... I'd get in, leave the door open, start the car to test it out, it'd lock the door, I wouldn't think about it, I'd finish the test, get out of the car and shut the door... boom, hello Mr. $40 locksmith. .
There are some more brackets under the dash to attach wiring and so forth too, and plenty of room to run the wiring.
The rear window - you can actually get wires behind the rubber molding without compromisign the waterproofedness of the window! Great for GPS and CB antennas.
Like the easy hook-up for the electronic brake controller for towing, much easier then testing 5 different wires with a multi-meter... just plug in and your done! .
The removable ash tray in the cup holders on the dash. Great for those of us that don't like the old style ashtray, since we don't smoke! Now you can just remove it and have an extra cupholder!
I like the four doors .

OK, enough of my rambling... back to work!

Ok, here is my list. You can't get the 5.4 with the 5 speed! You can't get the V10 at all. The driver side wiper doesn't wipe all the way to the A pillar. You can't order 4.10 or 4.30 gears. In Canada it is cheaper to order the XLT if you want air & cruise. All 4x4s should have at least the 9.75 rear differential. 8 inch wide wheels should be standard. Other than these few minor irritants the truck is OK.

Three weeks ago, at the age of 43, I had never owned a truck of any sort, and never comtemplated owning one. To me, they were big, expensive, gas guzzling, problem-laden, noisy bubbas on the road. For a variety of reasons, three weeks ago, I became the owner of a 1999 F150 XLT Supercab Shortbed with 32,000 miles on it. Several things surprised me: 1) it was immaculate. Obviously the prior owner took very good care of his/her truck. ...and since buying it, I notice that almost every Ford 150/250/350 I pass on the road is equally well cared for; 2) smoooooth ride. In fact, smoother than any car I have previously owned... from Olds to Mitsu to Jeep to Buick. Not only smooth, but I never felt like I was driving a truck, till I needed to fill the back with manure...great interior space too, comfy and roomy for me and my dogs...everything within reach; 3)engine purrs like a cat...and a big cat when I need it...and it's only a V6; 4)found this website, which has already taught me more in three weeks about trucks and cars and engines and motor oils and air filters and etc than I learned in 43 years. 5)only cost me 15K...actually that kinda stunned me. Came with a liner and bed cap too.

I feel lucky to have stumbled on this beaut of a motor vehicle. It has the perfect amount of back seat space for my dogs and plenty of bed space for mulch, manure, compost and whatever else I need for the gardens. It runs sweet and strong and rides quiet above the road. And I have this enormous internet community to turn to for help, advise and information. It is the only truck I know of which such a dedicated following.
....
What has surprised me the most is that this is the first automoblie that almost forces me to take care of it. I even learned how to change the oil, wash it by hand and started keeping records. Now I'm looking to do some mods. Realize that to me, cars were something to get me from a to b. This truck has changed that. It demands a certain respect. Strange, maybe, but that's the way it is....</font>
which I have to agree with wholeheartedly. We have really great trucks; actually, we have really great vehicles. The touches like a bigger glove box and (in my case) fold down armrest console box would be nice. I wish the parking brake pedal wouldn't hit the sid of my left leg while I am driving.

Many people complain about the seats, but I guess I am coming from so much worse, because I think my 40-60 bench seat with power driver's side is extremely comfortable, although my truck is really new. I had a clapped out SHO before, and it would seriously strain my back after long drives. The air pillow lumbar support would leak air, so one had to keep pumping it up every few minutes if you needed the support.

My only worry at the moment is that when I start the truck in the very cold, the Oil light/oil gauge shows no pressure for 30-50 seconds, even though I know I have plenty of oil. Never does it when hot. This problem demonstrated that our oil "gauge" isn't one. I feel cheated at that.
