Fakefvc: So they should just run explicit sex at 4 p.m. (after school) or prime time? I don't think so. Reality check here, guys. I've got better things to do than dedicate my life to being a TV cop.

You know that line about parents controlling the remote and deciding what's on the tube? Well, it's good only to a certain extent. I've got 4 kids and 5 TVs in the house. Give me a break!

If you can't show people making love to each other in prime time with body fluids and all, I fail to see why major networks should show "agravated assault" with body fluids and all.

I think, worse of all, is the de-sensitivation that results from people getting accustomed to watching violence and cheering without intervening. That's what's happening for real now in schools and malls, kids and citizens getting beat up or swarmed while people stand by or even cheer, and it started SOMEWHERE, I figure.

Theres a little skill that Americans have seemed lost called "being a parent". How is it that parents can't control their kids and teach them the difference between right and wrong. I used to watch wrestling all the time as a youngster and turned out great thanks to my parents. God Bless 'em. So if people can't be real parents and raise upright standing citizens then they should at least familiarize themselves with that little black thing-a-majig with all the buttons on it-----oh yeah it's called a remote control!!!!!! Can y'all smell that???

Well, all I can say is this: If the problem is in your house, and your the parent, address it!

If five TVs and 4 kids are too much, get rid of a few TVs and spend more time together watching the Disney Channel.

It's not the kids to blame here, it's the parents. Plain and simple, if your the parent, LAY THE SMACK DOWN and tell them NO.
That's what I was trying to say.....

Spyder 207: The problem's not just in my house, man. It's in half the houses in North America. And ThAT's the reality. Check around. Lots of kids are raising themselves or glued to the tube, their folks are out there beating the Jones'es or working so hard much of the time.

This kind of violence on TV is going to come back and bite you one day Spyder, or your mom or your child or brother, if you have any. Some kid who doesn't know diddly about the real effects of a stomp or a chair upside the head will take some "look" or a spoken word the wrong way and go nuts to impress his friends and act out what they see on TV and destroy somebody, and for what? Ever heard of "copy-cat" crimes? It's in the news every day.

And we'll all wring our hands and say what a shame, what the hell was that kid thinking.

I agree that this is a real problem, but I contend that the answer is not to eliminate the programming or censor everything like some other countries have done in the past and continue to do today.

I'm not trying to be personal with you, but I hate hearing things like what you originally posted. From the sound of it it appeared as though you would suggest that the programming be removed or the show be censored.

Kids do act these things out and I'm sure many people here have played wrestling as children, and wrestle with their children even now. It is unfortunate that these things sometimes get out of hand, but I contend that the parents should be held responsible.

The reality is that those parents should not be out leaving the kids to raise themselves. They should be at home instilling the morals and ethical values that are a responsibility of good parenting.

You've really hit on an interesting topic that many of us disagree on, and I'm fine with that. If as you posted, one of these situations occur to me, I will simply lay the smack down and open the can that I carry with me always

Take Care.

BTW Free speech is what its all about, I respect your opinion, but I don't agree with it.

Quite a few years ago, back when wrestlers would take the "fake" issue with them to the grave, the promoters decided to get some hype going with the "Iranian hostage" situation. Hacksaw Jim Dugan carried Ol Glory, and the Iron Shiek waved the Iranian flag. Bitter enemies, hell they had 140 US citizens hostage! well, ol hacksaw won the match with his patented 2x4 to the head. the shiek vowed to call the Iotolla and start executing hostages. later that night, they were both arrested in the french quarter for smoking dope in dugans car.

Bottom Line?
ALL tv's come with a method to change channels and an on/off switch. And, I think I'm right on this too, both are easily accessible. At least mine are and I use them regularly.
Being a parent is a hard 24/7 job, but my kids are worth it.

ok, let me be the first to say that i let my 8 yr old son watch wrestling of course i always watch it with him and explain that it is fake. had him watch a documentary on it that showed how some of the moves are done.
however instead of letting him think that life is all about tv i also take him out and show him real world entertainment.
doing things like ride dirtbikes, play soccer, baseball, tennis, go fishing or hunting, or hiking, or just taking the street bike for a ride.
the only thing that really hurts children's young minds is when the parents say they can't control what they watch or don't have time to explain it or heaven forbid the time to take the child outside and enjoy the real world.
shifter: i think the best way to control what the kids watch would be to first get rid of at least 4 of those tv's.

Thumbs up

Spyder207: I respect your opinion, too. And wildchild, you're right about getting rid of a few of the TVs. Man, it's too tough being the TV cop in my house and I resent having to do it on top of watching what they're doing on the Internet.

For those who don't know me, I'm am definitely not for censoring stuff and I'm very much for free speech. It's fundamental to democracy and so is the responsibility that goes with it. That's why there's slander laws, for instance.

Thinking about it more, I'm distressed that wrestling just keeps getting more and more extreme. Where will it stop? When they pull sausages out of someone's gut and wave them around? Snuff wrestling in prime time?

Anyway, thanks all for the spirited discussion on this one. I was seriously exercised on Friday night and I do feel better getting this off my chest. You're all the greatest!

Shifter, if you're concerned about snuff wrestling coming next, you're too late.

Celebrity Death Match - MTV
(but, I don't think it's real. They look like clay people to me)

May I introduce the fact that some very real injuries have occurred in the wrestling forum and even some deaths... due to...insufficient choreography or bad props? So although its a game to some.. it can be a dangerous one. Children like to model themselves after their heroes... and not all of them have the capacity to figure out the consequences of their actions. (laughing here... both the heroes... and the children!!!)

I agree that timing is a critical factor in *when* these shows go on... and... (ducking my head here) I include the NHL!!!btw I LOVE a good talented skilled NHL game that uses brainsnot 240 pds behind a club. GO LEAFS

As a teacher.. I see a lot of these heroes reenacted in play(and in the skating rink.....)which leads to censorship of their activities and rightly so...

let us not assume that its neglectful parents.. who allow the tv to babysit their child, or are not monitoring the situation.... YOU would be surprised what your child is allowed to watch at a friends place... or what tapes that friend may have... or.. how that friend may educate your child...
what does one do? Keep communication and respect open... and pray.. and as one writer already suggested...take the time to sit with your children and prepare to enlighten them as they watch...
