So Obama wants to stay the course and continue the campaign while McCain wants to cut and run?

Poll
McCain Suspending Campaign

Sen. McCain has made a history making decision to temporarily suspend his campaign to go back to DC and work on the economy.

Was McCain's decision to suspend the campaign a country first decision or a political one?
View Past Results
91% - Country first
5% - Political because he's behind in the polls
3% - We'll have to wait and see

IMO, the 'real reason' McCain is suspending his campaign is exactly the reasoning he gave in his announcement.

Shocking as it may be, McCain has much more of a sense of duty and honor than other politicians.

FICKLE MUCH?? A candidate actually decides to do his job and it is all of a sudden not a good idea. Some people are saying he is trying to "dodge" the debate, yet Obama is the one who has declined all along to add more debates and do Town Hall meetings together.

If Obama had undercut McCain and said he was going to Washington to do his job lots of folks would be saying Obama has his priorities straight. I would like to watch the debates, but I'd sure like the future President of the US back in DC to decide on wether or not 700 bln dollars should be handed out.

Obama's probably just going to vote PRESENT anyway!

I had thought of starting a new thread, "The Campaign That Never Was" but I will skip it as this thread fits right in.

I may be completely wrong, but since the two Conventions, I have become convinced that neither pair of candidates "handlers" are going to allow them to be exposed to any more open ended exposure to the press than they can get away with.

The famous Maverick McCain that I voted for in the 2000 primary and would have voted for if he had won, has been effectively muzzled. He is reduced to reading off of Telepromptors, which he does really badly, it is embarrasing to watch, and his normally voluminous answers to questions are now cut down to "Yes", "No", or "I already answered that question".

Gov. Palin has become the Princess in the Tower, unavailable to anyone in the Press, the Government or pretty much the Public.

The Republican handlers seem Hell bent on running the campaign on what I personally consider "Mud Slinging" advertisements that in the main seem to distort the issues vis a vis Sen. Obama.

Sen. Obama is doing no better, as he seems to spend most of his time on air complaining about the Republican's advertising and spends little time on real issues. His running mate, Sen. Biden, who is probably the only real Pro in the whole race, is running all over the country by himself trying to stir up some interest in a real traditional campaign. And then, he has to essentially reject the latest Obama ad which portrays McCain as a bumbling product of the 1960's. That, by the way was a really crappy bit of fluff that I think we, the Public, didn't need to see.

It is both ironic and sad for me to see that what I think all will agree is potentially the most historic election matchup in the last century, maybe in our entire history, buggered up by two hurricanes, gas shortages, and now the financial meltdown and all of these events seem to be playing into the plans of the handlers of both parties.

Get your guy/gal nominated, stick with the platform and minimize any possible opportunity for your candidates to stick their foot in their mouth and try to get to Nov. 4th as quickly as possible.

To return to the topic of the thread, I think it is a political ploy and nothing more to delay or cancel debates etc. Neither of the candidates has any expertise in the economic field and neither has any particular sway with the other members of their parties. Neither one of them is likely to be a factor in helping Congressmen or Senators get elected in November and those guys are going to act and vote according to what they see as their own constituents interests, or forbid the thought, their own interests.

Perhaps this election year will go down in history in an entirely different way than many of us thought it would 3-4 months ago.

Bill

Question for ya --- why can't they do both? Meet during the day, debate at night? With the ability to set up a debate set anywhere (including DC), why can't they do both? After all, they have both been preparing sometime for this debate, right? Why not?

I personally would like to see the two candidates do some town hall type meetings so that we can really hear what their stands are. Oh, I forgot. Obama doesn't want town hall type meetings. Why is that?

I believe that this move by McCain will actually lead to a loss in the election but he will be doing the job he's been elected to do. I understand that people are excited about Obama now. What do you think they'll be feeling come June of '09? Excited? I don't think so.

I think McCain is doing the right thing, even if it leads to a loss in the election. Hopefully he can help reach an agreement where no one gets bailed out and we let the chips fall where they may. It's time for a wake up call in this country. We should just hunker down and ride this out like they did in the '30s. Survival of the fittest.

Ah, come on. Stealth---I am serious---I want to see how both of these guys do under pressure---let us see what happens to them after a day of meetings, discussion, head-bangin', and then a night of intense debate--- should shed somelight on some things.
