Test drove a Mustang yesterday
Wow I'm glad I saw this thread. I've been thinking about buying a Mustang recently, and this thread has really helped me with my thinking!
I guess I should shoot for a GT after all.
I guess I should shoot for a GT after all.
As of a few months ago a buddy of mine who has a Mustang and frequents stang forums said that the fastest 1/4 times yet from the current stangs are all on turbo'd V6 stangs....on stock internals at that.
Mock a V6 all you want (hey, I do too), but the 4.0 SOHc is no slouch and can be insanely fast with a simple bolt-on turbo kit that will walk all over GTs.

I always thought it'd be fun to take a v6 and mod the chit outta em
Then again, I agree with most that a v6 in a Mustang kinda makes me giggle
As far as I know a [solid axle] is preferred by the muscle car crowd and track (1/4 mi) entusiasts alike. I thought thats what people usually do is swap out IRS for a solid axle in drag cars.
Correct. People think solid axle and think that it's not good for handling. However technology has come a long way to make a car handle great with a sold axle. I wouldn't trade my solid axle for IRS.
I don't have any interest in drag racing. I want to drive on a closed course or a twisty mountain road. For that and IRS is prefered. The mustang uses it because it's cheap, nothing wrong with that, but any true "driving" car, not drag car uses an IRS. I don't know of many M3s, Ferraris, Porsches etc that use a solid rear axle.

The last largely new car introduced in this country with a live rear axle was the 1993 Camaro. Has Ford taken this retro thing too far? Forget all that guff about drag-racing customers demanding a live axle, this setup's a cost-cutter. Ford chose to invest more heavily in powertrain upgrades, and only the live axle can be built cheaply enough to sell in a $20,000 V-6 car and yet strongly enough to withstand 300 horsepower in a $30,000 one.
Um. Quoting a source from Motortend isn't really all that. It might be cheaper but Ford did not set out to build a road racing car when they built the S197. If you can't understand that than god help you. Also the rear end is NOT the same in the V6 and V8, so much for MT knowing their stuff.
PS: Didn't the F-Bodies have straight axles? They were made after 1993 ... Once again, MT is wrong. See how credible they are ... Errr, I mean how un-credible they are.

Screw that, just get a Suburu WRX STi and smoke any 3 series or mustang around a track. Suburu is the #1 most reliable car at the moment.

. Try mountain roads with cutbacks. Its scary riding with my friend up those roads in the STi. All trust is left in the AWD to keep that thing on the road. The turbo sounds awesome too.
