It really makes me happy when I help someone and they appreciate going the extra mile. It doesn't benefit me much (other than pay), but I try to make sure they have what they need, give honest opinions and if I don't know, I tell them. Sometimes you can fudge your way through things, but you need to know the line of when it's not a big deal, and when you need someone who knows more. People get all upset around the holidays that work in retail because they say how rude people are. While that's true, I've had 2 people get mad at me all season, and it was directed towards store policy. Your demeanor and willingness to help makes someone more likely to buy from you and I've been thanked countless times because I've helped someone fully instead of just saying "buy this."
Another example of this... had a customer take my name today after I helped her get a 37" LED flat panel, mount and something else she needed. My boss came up to me and said I was the man of the hour. She had called the store and said how nice I was and what a pleasant experience she had with me helping her. Really pays off, no extra raise though
