30-06 opinions?
So where would be a good place to look for a .308 Remington 700 PSS or the current version of that? Is the current version the 700 P? Do they only sell that model to police? Not trying to spend much though probably under $400 for the gun because I need to allow room in my budget for case, scope, and ammo.
Bipod comes later

You can also look for a remington 700 ADL in 308 and might be able to find a new one for $400. The Rem 700 ADL still has the same famous action as the other 700's with just a little different stock and barrel finish.

If you are wanting a stainless synthetic rifle then give the Tikka T3 lite a very hard look. You will be hard pressed to find a rifle that offers so much in this price range.

If you don't mind a wood stocked rifle with a blue barrel then I would spend my money on a CZ 550. These rifles should be priced above $1000 instead of $550 - you get a lot of gun for the money and in my opnion these are the best sub $100 rifle on the market today.

Whittaker guns has the CZ's cheaper than Buds though.

I'll look at the other site you said and see how much it is there. I do need a strong case for air travel and locking capabilities though. (Mom HATES guns, but will let me get one since I am a grown man now) We will see how much I truly can spend. I was also trying to buy a viper security system with remote start over the summer. I was trying to keep the cost of the rifle down for that reason. I'll definitely take a good look at the CZ though. Also, what are the major differences from the 30-06 to the .308? Thanks
Whittakers is usually the place to buy CZ, they are probably the largest shop for online sales for CZ and are very well respected for being good people to deal with.
CZ is that much better than Savage! I own most major brands of rifles out today and CZ is by far my favorite with Tikka running a close second. Don't get me wrong, Savage makes an accurate rifle - one of the most accurate in it's price range. But it stops there. Savage has poor machining, rough edges, and cheaply made stocks. All of this equals poor over-all workmanship and poor resale value. You will hear people talk about the Savage accu-trigger and how nice it is but when I read posts like that then I know that they have never experienced a truly nice trigger system. CZ has probably one of most sought after trigger systems on the market today for a high production, factory rifle. I do not own a CZ that will not consistently shoot sub MOA. That basically means that it will shoot less than 1 inch groups at 100 yards, 2 inch groups at 200 etc. This is what most people look for in a quality rifle. You are probably wondering why you have never heard of CZ before. The reason why is because they have only had a large presence in the US since the early 90's but they have been widely used and won many awards in European countries for several decades. They are basically the Remington 700 over seas!
The biggest difference in the 06 or .308 will be the cost of ammo. The .308 will be a little cheaper. They are both 30 caliber bullets and will pack a punch. They are both going to pack a nice recoil too. If you are a first time shooter (or one with minimal experience) than this is going to be a big dive for you. I have seen many people jump into shooting buy buying a large bore rifle and often times this is a BIG mistake. Large bore rifles can cause many bad habits to develop in a new shooter that can be tough to get rid of. You can easily develop a "flinch" because you are anticipating the recoil of the rifle and "pull the shot". This will cause you to be a poor shot because you will actually pull the trigger/rifle sending it off of the target.
I always recommend someone new to rifles to purchase a lighter caliber to learn to be a good marksman. I'm not talking about learning how to just shoot but, learning how to shoot "well". If you plan to do a lot of target shooting then I would not recommend a 30-06 or a 308 to you. The ammo cost is going to be really expensive and the recoil may be more than what you will expect.
I realize you want the best of both worlds but a large game hunting rifle and a target rifle usually never fit the same slot.
These are just my humble opinions so take them as you will.

Hey no problem man, I love talking guns! I also think it's important to get others involved in firearms.
People always say spend as much as possible on your glass because you can't hit what ya can't see. personally, I Like the Nikon line of scopes. I think you really get a nice product for the money spent. The Bushnell elite 3200 and 4200, Burris FF II, Leupold VX I & VX II are all good scopes. I think the Leupolds can be a little over-priced compared to the Nikon's though. A $150 nikon will equal a $250 Leupold in quality (in my opinion).

The best rifle that Savage has ever made is model 99. My first high power rifle was a 99 in 308. I still use it. The 99 is still the most accurate lever action ever put out. In 308 it is outstanding.
Hey simple man, I couldnt help but notice those beautiful AR's. I have been looking into getting one but don't know much about them. Which brand would you reccomend? I've been looking into the Bushmaster varmiter in .223 for target shooting and some cyote hunting and later buying either a 50 beowulf or a .450 bushmaster upper for hog hunting. Hogs are pretty think around here and I want something with a little more knock down power than my .270. Sorry for hijacking the thread lol

I looked at the CZ 550 American .308 and with a $150 scope it will come out at $710! Then factor in carrying case, ammo, and bipod and it will come out around $1k. I really have no intention on spending that much and wanted to keep it all below $600 for now. I think this first gun will be one to learn on and then if I shoot enough I will invest in a higher quality gun. So if I can find a gun and scope combo for under $400 then I will be happy I think. It doesn't have to be the best for the first gun, but the best for the money I guess you could say. Then if I get into shooting more I will invest in a more quality gun to add to my collection

If I were to get a hog gun, I would get a 7mm short mag or a .300win mag. But those guns are very loud and alot of kick. Perhaps a semi auto .308...?
