30-06 opinions?

Ok I am a newbie when it comes to firearms. I want to target shoot and maybe hunt on a rare occasion. I think I have decided on a 30-06, but I am not sure what rifle I want. I definitely want one with a scope and something that is less than $600 if possible. There are so man choices of brands and models I don't even know where to start. Thanks guys!

For out of the box, best accuaracy, your looking at a Savage. The 3006 is as good a place to start as any of the cartridges out there. The 308 is also a good choice and will do just about the same thing a 3006 will do in a smaller case. FWIW, all of the bullet makers use a cartridge based on the 308 cartridge to test their bullets. Their claim is that the case is a better case capacity to bore ratio than any other and is inheritantly more accurate. The Remington 40X tests show that to be true but you're not talking a benchrest rest rifle but a hunting rifle. The 3006 will serve your needs if that's what you want.

Should I look at the Savage package deals with the scopes on them? I like the black and stainless look to me they look sweet Will I need a gun case, or can I just get a soft case and put it in my truck box since it is not accessible from the cab

Something like this?

Go with a Savage Model 111. I have a .270 that came with a simmons scope that is hella accurate. I had it bore sighted and only had to make 1 adjustment after the first two shots, and It was perfect. I would get a hard case if you are going to put in a vehicle. Also For target shooting and the possibility the .270 is plenty of power and cheaper to shoot.

Hmm I will look into the .270 then. Where can I purchase the rifle, case, and ammo? Thanks

If you're hunting in woods where the average shot is 100 yards or less, look into a 30-30. Bust brush gun ever. something like:

or

Thought the Winchester is no longer in production, they are abundant in the pawn shops.

Personally I like the Marlin.

****s Sporting Goods, Bass Pro Shops for big name shops. Alot of small local type gun shops will have them also. You may also be able to pick up a used one cheaper. I gave $325 for mine with 2 boxes of ammo. It had only been shot 8 times. Im guessing they were trying to sight it in and never finished. Like I said I had mine bore sighted and reccomend you do the same. Also check out www.gunbroker.com Only thing is that if you buy from there it has to go to a FFL holder.

The 111 package is at walmart for 362 bucks then I'd have to buy a case and rounds. As soon as June hits I'll be on my way to get one. Now just need to decide .270 or 30-06. Both of them are 100 rounds for $93 at cabellas. So there really is no price difference in ammo.

Remington's and savages are great, remingtons being a little better.

I would go with a more flat shooting round like a 7mm, 30-06, .300mag, .260, ect

.308 is not a flat shooting round but is cheaper and more variety of ammo. A way to compensate for the .308 is to buy a tactical scope with the exposed ***** in Minutes of Angle to adjust for elevation and windage.

I shoot a FN SPR .308 which is out of your price range but very sweet

I would also advise getting a bull barrel which can resist heat and vibration better

Pic of my gun. If you want any target shooting advice, send me a PM. I love that stuff!

.270 = good hand down gun for your kid
30-06 = good all round gun, lots of different loads for different game
300 win-mag = stop um in there tracks, the shock wave alone will drop um
45-70 = best brush gun, 150 yard max
22-250 = for those pesky varmints
I bought the 7mm, great gun, winchester m-70. If I had to do it again it would be the 300, bull barrel, for those long shots. It really all depends on where and what you want to kill.

Look at the Remington 710 package as a starter. The Remington 700 has been the best and most aqua rt since it came out in the early 60's. You and you alone are the only one that you have to satisfy. Shooting now days is a very personal thing. Good luck and good shooting.

JMB, I am mainly looking for something to target shoot with and something that will hold up over time and be fun to shoot.
