No problem. A good friend of mine who is an FFL in Vienna has been shooting benchrest longer than I have been alive. We have both been in the firearms industry and would be happy to give you our input and get you a good deal on whatever you thing will work best for you, last a long time and be able to upgrade if you get more serious about target/long range shooting.

i work at bass pro in and honestly i would pick the remington 700 over any rifle we sell. savage's advantage is the accutrigger, probably the best trigger on the market but you can always get a gunsmith to work on your triiger pull. either gun would be a good choice tho, id get the remington 700 of your choice with a nice leupold scope. a good scope is very important, don't buy a nice gun and put a crap scope on and dont go cheap on the base and rings either.

You can't go wrong with a 30-06. Or a .270. The only advantage of the '06 is the ability to use heavier bullets if you ever might be hunting elk, moose or bear.

I prefer the '06 just for that reason, probably the best all-around cartridge ever made.

I love my Remington 700, but wish like hell I'd bought a Winchester Model 70 before they were discontinued a year or so ago. The Savages have a good reputation for accuracy as well though.

Please don't go low end (Remington 710, Mossberg 100. etc..) . Yeah they'll shoot, but those are very much "loss-leader" rifles, the bottom of the barrel.. Wal Mart specials, if you will.

You can probably get a Remington 700 or Savage 110, scoped and ready to go, for about $450 - $500 or so if you shop around. Either would be a bargain, a fine rifle that'll be something to pass down to your kids.

The Bull barrell will only benefit you if you are going to shoot 50+ rounds in one setting with no stopping. Accuracy isnt going to change that much if you have a good rest and learn not not yank the trigger. A good clean gentle pull will change how accurate alot. You never want to anticipate when the gun is going to go off. You will not be as accurate. Alot of accuracy depends on the shooter not the scope or the rifle.

Is the accutrigger really worth it? I looked at ****s sporting goods and they had the one without the accutrigger but I'm not sure how much the one with it would cost?
So these are the options with or without accutrigger I guess.

They all look good, but I'm not sure where to compare prices. ****s only has the 111 w/o the accutrigger I guess I can special order or buy online I guess. The 110 looks to be around $500 with accutrigger and the 111 with accutrigger around $380 from gunrush.com

Mine doesnt have the accu-trigger. I have not had the chance to shoot one with it. The one thing mine has that I really like is the removable mag. Great for atv's and vehicles.

i've never shot the accutrigger but we had a display from savage at work where you could change the trigger pull and play with it. i would still stick with the remington 700. you can get the remington 700 sps which is a synthetic stock and matte black barrel for 499. the 700 sps stainless definetly has a better bolt action, way smoother, i believe the word is jeweled, if you look at the bolt you'll see what im sayin, thats around 599. For accuracy i think the remington 700 would be your best choice, along with a nice scope, again a leupold VXI in a 3-9x40 or a 4-12x40. There are better leupold scopes but at bass pro we have the VXI 3-9 for 219 and the 4-12 for 279. the VXIIs and IIIs and up are better scopes but way more expensive. btw the 30-06 is a great round.

The modal 70 is coming back. It will be built by I believe FN. The company that owns FN also owns Winchester and USRA and Browning.

go with a ruger m77 mark II its a great gun and i love it, it shoots well and is very nice. Oh and go with a nikon buckmaster 3-9x40 scope

If I were you since your going to be doing target shooting I personaly would go with a lighter round than a 30-06 or a .270, maybe something like a 22-250, a 243, or a 223 but if you plan on doing any kind of big game hunting also I would stick with a 30-06 or a .270. I've got a remington model 700 .270 with a Nikon buckmasters 3x9x40 scope and it's a great combo. If your going to be doing any hunting(mainly deer and other animals of that size) I you can't go wrong with a .270, 30-06, 7MM, 308, or a 300 which will knock down anything except maybe the large african game lol.

You can get a Savage 110 with Accutrigger for the same price as the 111 w/o it. Go to Walmart. I bought a Savage 110 with the Accutrigger in .30-06 for just under $400. My buddy bought a 111 in .30-06 at the same time for the same price at Bass Pro. If you're going with a Savage, I would certainly get the 110 instead of the 111. I actually just got back from shooting mine about a half hour ago.

Jiggle========There was a time I would have said "go to wal-Mart" too. Now that wal-mart is starting to phase out all guns.

I must have overlooked the part about "mainly target shooting". If you're looking to print tight groups on paper as well as have something to use on game up to elk size then I think a Remington 700 in .308 would be the way to go. For whatever reason the .308 is an inherently accurate cartridge in any decent rifle. Most SWAT teams (and many military snipers) use the .308 with either Federal 168 grain Match or the Black Hills 165 gr. hp.

I will probably look into a bipod they are great to have
