I'm pissed now I just found out that NO ONE has an SPS tactical They are all sold out and I emailed buds about when they will get in more. I really like the SPS tactical too! I really hope I can find one I may just have to go for the regular sps unless my dad wants to help me pay for the police

At Sportsman's Warehouse, I got it for $550 ($130 below MSRP). I will be taking it down to sight in on Monday or Tuesday and will see what kind of grouping I can get. The Buckmasters is a hunting weapon, but you should be able to pick up a 700 SPS for $500 or less.

I looked at .308, .30-06 and .300 Win Magnum. The .308 and the .30-06 are very similar in bullet drop, with the .30-06 having the slightly better performance but retain a lot more energy (with comparable loads the .308 drops 24.43" at 400 yds and the .30-06 drops 22.43", but the .30-06 retains 1586 ft-lbs to the .308's 1460 ft-lbs). The .300 WSM only drops 18.31" and retains 1925 ft-lbs, but with a noticably larger recoil. So I found the .30-06 the best compromise with universally available ammo at a low price.

Anyway, I completed the assemble with a Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 scope for $140. It was a choice between this and a Leupold. The Leupold is considered sturdier, but to me the Nikon has better light-gathering (important to me because I get migraines from staring into a scope too long). So brand-new rifle, scope, rings, and mounts you can walk out for $700, or less with a slightly-used setup.
Let me know how you like the gun and scope since I was looking at that exact scope and pretty much the same exact gun in .308 and in black

The Tactical is available only through Remington Premium Dealers. Go here http://www.remington.com/products/fi...s/Default.aspx to find the list for your state. The good news is Remington is offering a mail-in rebate on the Tactical (and many other items except of course the one I just bought).

Well I just talked to my dad and he is looking to get a good .22 for himself, so it looks like I will be starting out with one also. I do like the Remington line and I think this is the one I might start out with

Would you guys throw a bipod on that or how do you guys target shoot with your .22's? Thanks!

I need to find out when the .308 tactical production month is so I know when to buy one this fall

I think the 22 route is the way to go. The Rem 597 is an OK rifle but nothing great. I have owned one and sold it and have spoke to several that have owned one too and they were not impressed either. If your gonna just hunt with it then it will work fine but if you want to practice shooting great targets then it's not the rifle for you.

If you want a semi-auto rifle then check out either the Ruger 10-22 or the Marlin model 60. The 60 will shoot a little more accurate then the Ruger out of the box but the Ruger can be heavily modded and can be turned into a very accurate target rifle.

My advice for both you and your dad would be to buy a CZ 452. There are many people that swear the CZ's will run with the $1000 bench rest rifles and I agree. I own several CZ 452's and you would have a hard time finding any sub $1K rifle that will out shoot it.

Check out this rifle, it would be a great one to buy.

I second the 10/22 or the Marlin Model 60. I have the Model 60 and it is a great rifle. It is a great gun and will shoot as fast as you can pull the trigger.

Remington has the best action on the market unless you go custom. The only other one that is close is weatherby/howa and winchester.

Since Remington makes several different actions I assume you are referring to the rem 700 action!?!?

I wouldn't go as far as saying they are the "best on the market" but definitely in the top 3 in my opinion. I like the Mauser 98 a little better and it has been the action everyone compares to for over the last 100 years. Maybe this is why I like the CZ line of rifles so much.

I'll talk to my dad about the CZ's. The only thing I have an issue with is that the CZ will be expensive once I get a scope and everything on it. Then I wouldn't have as much to spend on the .308 in the fall. I may just get the CZ though and suggest it to my dad too. It is probably worth the investment because I will have it for a long time anyways.

Are all CZ 253's created equal?

Everything I have told you has just been my opinion. You really should read the shooting forum HERE and learn all you can before you buy a rifle. You need more opinions than just us guys in a truck forum can give ya.

Another option is the Ruger 10-22. You can buy these for as little as $180 brand new and then later on customize it into a sweet looking tack driver. Heck parts are cheap for these - $100 fluted stainless match barrel, $125 for a thumbhole laminate stock, $70 for a target trigger. You can even buy another barrel and bolt and convert it to the newer 17HM2 and switch back and forth between calibers. These rifles are a lot of fun.

Just some food for thought.

Ruger 10/22 is definitely highly customizable. I have a friend that has one that is fully suppressed and it is SWEET!

These aren't mine but here are some pics that show what all you can do with a plain old 10-22.

Yea but your talking some money right there right? I will look into the 10-22 as an option because then I could spend as much as the CZ and have a custom gun. What are some good 10-22 custom part sites. I would be doing all the work on the gun too it's just cheaper that way

Well there looks to be a fair amount of custom stuff that isn't that expensive for the 10-22. I would do stock, barrel, scope, scope mounts, and low pull trigger.
Is this a good base model?

This stock in red is SWEET! http://www.rimfiresports.com/merchan...Code=YUKON-XTR

That would be a fine model to start off with. I usually start off with the stainless 10-22 because then it's really easy to sell of the factory barrel and wood stock to someone that just has an old 10-22 they want to make look new again. But I have seen a lot of people buy the factory synthetic stock too. You could probably get $60 for the factory barrel and stock on that rifle when you go to sell it.

There are so many people out there that sell custom parts for the Rugers but I'll list a few websites for you.

I've bought many 10-22 stocks and barrels from these people.

http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/

http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/

By selling off the old parts and looking for specials on the custom parts, I only had $280 in this Ruger 10-22 and I traded it even to a gunshop here for a $600 CZ 527 .223 caliber.
