Vasectomy
Vasectomy
Seeing as how there are hundreds of 30-50 y.o. family men here, I'll ask the question:
Vasectomy. How many have been "lucky enough" to have this done? Does it really hurt? Is the "no scalpel" method all that and a bag of chips?
Need help here. I'm getting closer to wanting to get it done but need some reassurance.

It's was simple office procedure 19 years ago.
I'm not familiar with the 'no scapel' method.
I had two options:
The 'ball pean hammer' method and the 'desk drawer' method.
I don't recall which method I chose because I blacked out.
No lasting side effects except that I find I blow my nose a lot more.
Also I used to sing bass and now I'm a tenor.
Here is what happened to me:
They told me to shave "the area" before I came in but, they didn't specify how much to shave.
When I came in the doc looked and started laughing, "What in hell did you do?"
They used a local, I think novocaine like the dentist uses.
I still had some sensation when the doc started cutting and told him I needed more anesthetic.
He said he was going to give the nurse a baseball bat if I didn't hold still.
Afterwards, he showed me what looked like two little uncooked macaroni in a jar.
He said, "I got to send these up to Richmond so I can get paid."
Damn HMOs !

This was about the heaviest thing I lifted...

I would go on ad nauseum about the horrors of my ordeal.
Alas, I went too far and was kicked out of bed when I said it was worse than childbirth.
Up until then it was great being a hero/victim due to my 'sacrifice'.
It's been about 5 years since I had the procedure. I don't remember the name of the drug they gave me beforehand but it was some potent stuff. I took the pill while I was in the waiting room watching CNN...next thing I knew it was the next day and I was home on the couch. Two words - baggy boxers! You'll have some swelling (ever see the public health film 'your testes and you' in the movie "Johnny Dangerously"?). I only missed 2 days of work.

I'll be getting the big V soon, since m wife and I have all the kids we want. Besides, it's reversible anyway. I fail to see wat the big deal is.

My doctor wanted to meet with my wife and me so that we understood that the particular procedure he used was permanent, non-reversible.
By removing tube sections nearly an inch long and tieing both ends off there was no way they could accidently reconnect.
The procedures that were reversible, i.e. snip and tie without removal, could fuse back together in 1 in 10,000 cases.
That 1 guy is who you see looking all confident on Maury Povich until he Maury tells him he IS the daddy.
I'm sure aspects have improved since I went through it 20 years ago.
Just make sure if you go the reversible route, you get some assurance it only reverses when you want it to.
So I've been considering this as well. I'm 31 and married, and neither my wife or I want kids. The thing I'm most curious about is the cost. My insurance at my job realllly sucks, and gets worse every year it seems like.
Anyone have any insight into that? Thanks.
