Look at what people say about their Tundra's at www.tundrasolutions.com to see from them first hand how these things rank. They have one post about a guy who's tranny goes all crazy when pulling a 7 or 8000 lb travel trailer, a gooseneck too no less. The engineer who saw it and tested blamed the guy for overloading it causing a bad angle on the driveshaft. That is the stupidity, you'd think it would be better of an angle for the shaft seeing how it would be on less of an angle.

The better point is this. What holds up better with any given weight? Will the Ford only pull 9k at most, but solid and smooth to the Tundra, which I believe to be a 9/8th sized F-150, pulling almost 11k and all but blow up doing so?
This is the real issue with the Tundra. The people who buy them are being told that it will tow 10,500 lbs right out of the box, but it's no where near capable of doing it. Well, it'll do it but for how long before something grenades, leaving a trail of parts behind. Then there's the tailgate "issue". You buy a truck to haul your quad, but Toyota says to remove the tailgate to load heavy objects. So now you have a situation where the quad is longer then the box, the rear wheels need something to sit on, such as a tailgate, but you had to remove it to load the quad. The thing you bought the truck for, it can't do. Quite the burn, I can understand why so many Tundra owners are PO'd.

A classic from the tailgate thread:

It sounds like alot of people think the tailgate issue only applies to loading
and unloading atvs and bikes with ramps.
When I picked this truck up from the dealership I inspected the tailgate very closely because I had been watching this and other threads about this problem. The tailgate looked perfect. Well, I was just unloading boxes of t-shirts (about 35lbs ea. max.) and while I (about 170lbs.) was crouched on the tailgate, holding a box, I peered over at the corner of the tailgate. I literally watched a crack appear!
I really like this truck and I can't really complain, because I knew about this issue all along . That being said, it is pretty ridiculous to have to take your
tailgate off just to get in the bed and remove a couple of boxes.
We own a screenprinting business and moving t-shirts is what this trucks main intended purpose is. I just hope if and when Toyota makes a better tailgate, it will be before any body-style changes and it will retro-fit these trucks.
Another:
Even if you had to pay $1000 to upgrade the tailgate you are hard pressed to find a better vehicle.
Imagine how excited this guy would be if the original tailgate had held up like it should have.
My update: I get tailgate #3 installed this Saturday!

After some deep thought, I believe that I've figured out just what Toyota changed. They created the import version of the El Camino! You can drive it like a car all day long, just don't put anything in the box!
