IIHS Chooses 2008 "Top Safety Picks", Includes Pickup Trucks

Looks like the Tundra is the ONLY truck to be top pick in safety.

After running yet more vehicles into stationary objects, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released its list of vehicles that are "Top Safety Picks" for 2008. At the beginning of 2007, only 13 cars met the tougher new standards that were laid down for being rated a Top Pick, which includes the availability of Electronic Stability Control. Twenty-one new cars meet the IIHS' criteria now, and the list has swelled to 34.

Pickups are being included for the first time this year, and Toyota's Tundra is the only model to make the cut. Other notables on the list for 2008 include the Honda Accord, Element and Odyssey, Hyundai Veracruz, Saturn VUE, and the new Subaru Impreza. Overall, Ford and its Volvo subsidiary lead the list with eight Top Safety Picks, while Honda places second with seven models that are recommended. A complete photo gallery of winners is available by clicking below.

And the only reason the Tundra made it is because of stability control. That seems to take precedence over whether the vehicle is safe in a crash.
Also, as it was not a relatively new model, the Ford was not tested.

Yes and if you look closely at the picture posted here, you can see that the bed is bent down a bit from the frame bowing. And that is on a front crash.

I thought Ford was adverstizing a 5star frontal crash rating for the F150? If so Toyota must have off IIHS to not test the F150

Funny that the F150 was crash tested BETTER than the tundra, and no changes were made to either vehicles to effect test ratings and now the Tundra supposedly qualifies? Something smells....

There is more to safety than just the frontal crash test rating that everyone likes to brag up.

Pickup trucks were eligible to win for the first time this year because the institute conducted side-impact tests on many models. The Toyota Tundra, which has standard stability control and side air bags, was the first pickup truck to receive the insurance institute's designation.
