My ignorance comment was directed at stopper NOT you, and not JUST for the revenue comment. I don't claim to be an expert on Highway Patrol Agencies, why, because we don't have them here in KY. We have the KSP that does do road duty but it's not thier major time consumer. We have KVE that does do road duty but again commercial vehicles are thier bread and butter, and then we have county agencies like mine who's main objective is paper serving, responding to calls and if we have time, road duty. City agencies do more road duty than anyone and again thier main goal is answering calls.
So to sum it up, I'm from a different world than you Texans are so I can't comment on how your governments take in revenue BUT the gist of my comments were that public safety is paramount not revenue. BESIDES, In Ky the revenue from tickets does not go back to that particular agency, it's put into the state's general fund and distributed by the state government as they see fit with no attention paid what agency filled the coffers the most.
Oh and one more thing. If you expect to gain any respect from me or anyone else concerning the matters at hand, starting off with the comment that you are a frequent flyer in the defensive driver program doesn't help your case. It shows me that you think the laws of the land don't apply to you and it shows me the lack of respect for your fellow man. I don't care what kind of roads you drive on, if they are marked for a certain speed, that is the limit period. Just because you don't agree with that speed limit doesn't give you the right to ignore it.

Ok let me help you out. Let's keep it simple here.
one cruiser= 20,000 +/-
equipment (radio, siren, lights, stripes, in-car video, cage, etc.)= 7,500 +/-
Fuel per day= $50 +/-
Insurance= we won't even calculate that in since it varies so much.
Maintenance= approximately 3 cents per mile is average here.
So that's the initial costs(27,500) plus the upkeep costs ($2000 per month) that equals 51,500 per year per car. times that by the number of police cars on the road.
Now since there is no way to accurately find out how many new cars are on the road in each state without doing tons of reasearch and spending tons of money. Let's look at it this way.
$23000000000
23 billion dollars divided by just those 40 states is
575 million per state.
575 million divided by 51,500 is 11,165 brand spanking new police cars for 1 year per state. Ok, there are 23,507,783 people in Texas as of 2006. So that is one new police cruiser for every 2105 and a half people in Texas. Sounds good right, OH wait that would mean that ever cent of that money is spent on new police cars and fuel. But we all know that isn't the case is it, it's spent on schools, roads, streetlights, sewer systems, and about a million other things. Oh and that is JUST the cars, you still have to pay the officer, put him in uniform, buy his gun, his belt, his shoes, his jacket, his benifits, his bond, his training, his workers comp...shall I go on?
EDIT: OOOOPS I did my calculations on 23 billion, NOT 2.3 billion. I guess money just don't go as far as it used to I guess. LOL

DUDE, you've gone back to aguing MY point, TAXES do pay for those things. Revenue from tickes do not. If you don't want to pay taxes and speed as much as you want, buy yourself an island and drive as fast as you want.
Besides the best way to keep from paying that Ticket Tax is not to do something that gets you ticketed in the first place. You won't pay a dime that way.

Its been that way since 1989.
In Michigan every ticket collected nets $5 for the law enforcement agency that writes it.
Tickets bring in revenue, but its far from a profit maker.
The way I see it, Your fines should be used for traffic enforcement. After all its the morons getting all the tickets that are requiring the state to spend all the cash on patrol cars and traffic cops.
Why should I have to pony up $$$ so the state can baby sit bad drivers?

You complain about the know-it-alls but you are the one spouting off the "facts".

sorry I gave facts..but the budget was not in question...2.3 billion was GENERATED revenue from ticketing. Crap, I did it again. Me stating facts again. If I gave you 10 thousand dollars, you'd crap your pants because you thought that it was alot of money. If I gave you a dollar, you'd think whatever...When I quote facts about 2.3 billion being generated in revenue, you reply by saying:
