Why is it customary to tip?
There are a lot of situations that I wonder why people dont get tipped.
Someone mentioned a full service station, where they wipe your windshields, check your oil, etc. but then someone on here said anyone could do that, that it doesnt take any social graces, etc etc. but I think it does. If youre rude, I wouldnt go back to that station.

I don't know the exact figures but,
the minimum wage scale is like $5.25
and the food service waitstaff earn like $1.20.
They are paid on a reduced scale BECAUSE of tipping.
People tip generously for two reasons.
1) The pay scale is less than 25% of minimum wage
2) There are people out there that don't tip.
I was at a dinner/theatre club.
The wait staff were also the performers they served while performing.
Each actor had two tables, for the entire evening.
There were about eight people at each table and each person had around a $40 tab. I had a coupon for half off as did the other table.
My bill was about $160, I tipped 20% on the full bill, about $65.
Our waitress should have pulled down about $130 for the evening.
She was upset with the guy at the next table when he paid and asked if anything was wrong with the service or food that evening. He said no, he had a coupon for half off and I guess he figured any tip over $20 was outrageuos. Even though he sat on his *** for three hours was entertained and waited on hand and foot.
Some people just don't get it.

The words are synonomus....so we are both right!
Main Entry: en·sure
Pronunciation: \in-ˈshu̇r\
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): en·sured; en·sur·ing
Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French ensurer, alteration of assurer — more at assure
Date: 1660
: to make sure, certain, or safe : guarantee
synonyms ensure, insure, assure, secure mean to make a thing or person sure. ensure, insure, and assure are interchangeable in many contexts where they indicate the making certain or inevitable of an outcome, but ensure may imply a virtual guarantee <the government has ensured the safety of the refugees>, while insure sometimes stresses the taking of necessary measures beforehand <careful planning should insure the success of the party>, and assure distinctively implies the removal of doubt and suspense from a person's mind <I assure you that no harm will be done>. secure implies action taken to guard against attack or loss <sent reinforcements to secure their position>.

I worked in a gas station back in the days before self service. Some customers did tip but it was not expected, we did make minimum wage +. This place was on the GSP in NJ - and most of the tippers were from NYC - I guess just because I cleaned their windshield (without even being asked!) and offered to look under the hood was enough to warrant a tip in their eyes. Locals and commuters hardly ever tipped unless they wanted extra service, like air put in their tires.
I tend not to mind too much if the order takes awhile to get to the table, I usually like to sit and relax while enjoying the restaurant atmosphere. I don't even mind if my order isn't exactly perfect as it is most likely not the waiter's/waitress' fault anyways. But there is one way that will guarantee that I won't leave a tip. If the server does not keep up on my refills. That is the #1 thing that makes my blood boil, especially when the place isn't really busy. Sometimes i'll just get up and go get it myself. Sorry, i'll just pay and leave without leaving a tip.. maybe 2 cents if it's spare change in my pocket

When was the last time this happened?
Full service stations died out in the 50's here.
We have to get out and pump our own, clean our own windshiled, check our own tires and check our own oil.
There is 3 full sevice (meaning they pump your gas and only your gas, no windshields, oil, tires or anything.) left in town I think. 2 are teh same compnay, all of them gas is $.40 a gallon more and the gas is almost more fit to drink than burn......

All I am saying, its not the smartest career move. I would compare it to being a stripper.
just the circumstances are a little different.

So are you saying that the college students juggling bills and trying to make it on their own for the first time should not be tipped?

...but lets say you go to an expensive place and the steak dinner is 40 bucks for basically the same thing, why should I tip someone the same 20 percent (which is now the same 6 bucks that i gave the guy who busted his *** at the cheaper restaurant) for doing their job. ANd if he does really good, I should tip him 10 bucks? Thats where the problem is. And these people are expecting it, whether their service was good or not. ANd then you got to worry about them doing something to your damn food.

to answer the first question: no i think that guy shold get tipped and to me thats one of the jobs that got me through school. I was talking about career wise.
And to answer shine's question, I don't really dont remember how it tasted. But how the dinner was in the edible sense, had nothing to do with my waiter, unless he spit in it.
No way am I hatin' on waiters or anything, dont get me wrong. I have been there and done that and moved on. I am just questioning the whole tipping thing, and people doing their job thinking they deserve more than what they should get. I mean, at my job, I bust my *** and try to do a good job, while others I notice not doing their part, but we get paid the same. ITs not fair, just the way of the world I guess.
I think this ha been a great topic of discussion by the way.
